I would say 30-40% of vans in my depot would fail. I have a newish one for my round so it's ok, but before I would refuse vans whenever if I had to.
Just imagine if thousands of unsafe vans were refused by everyone, no one did the 15-30 minutes free overtime everyday, or the crazies who come in two hours early for free everyday stopped. Actually just doing the job you are contractually and legally meant to do like proper safety checks. I know it would never happen in a million years, but it's ironic that the shitness that everyone complains about could be solved by actually doing the job.
The managers are obviously borderline psychotic in a lot of depots, but actual posties are some of the most short-sighted, crabs in a bucket people I have ever met. Extremely conflict avoidant too.

Just everyone doing proper van checks and their contractual work would be more effective at change than striking

Lots of posties are their own worst enemy but nothing will change them unfortunately.

We've got an handful who come in early, for free. They prep their door-to-doors and throw their sequence in
Their excuse is that they wouldn't complete it if they didn't
Idiots

You could understand taking the shortcuts before whene it was job and knock , but now it’s beyond baffling why people still work for free
I guess they must feel pressured into it

If it's the whole office then you'd need to ballot for it, as RM could construe it to be unofficial industrial action

It was just a thought experiment tbh. Royal Mail would literally be forced to make rapid changes just by people following the rules and contract given to them. Out of interest though how is that even legally possible? What would you ballot, People following the law?SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑Today, 19:41If it's the whole office then you'd need to ballot for it, as RM could construe it to be unofficial industrial action

I don't know if it's OCD or just extreme institutionalisation, either way they need to be heavily medicatedTooManyLoops wrote: ↑Today, 18:35We've got an handful who come in early, for free. They prep their door-to-doors and throw their sequence in

Impossible.
What actually could work is our union standing up against managers falsely accusing posties of not working hard enough. Dave Ward should be telling every local rep to keep track of every false accusation by management and hold those managers accountable for harassment. Every postie should report back to their local rep and he/she should keep a record.... the question is whether Royal Mail themselves will clamp down on managers behaving this way.... probably impossible too.
Royal Mail should have a few afternoon workers who clear up anything brought back.
Any postie who is genuinely thought to not be pulling their weight should be spoken to privately + with a rep, and not humiliated in front of the rest of their colleagues by an angry manager.
For too long the CWU has allowed management to falsely accuse 99% of its workforce of being 'slow' to either get posties to rush round or go overtime - It's incredible, it is diabolical.... and it's likely why people take shortcuts and come in early etc...
CWU - Stop the bullying and harassment!
