Workplace Creche

Post by baldrick »

At Mount Pleasant we have a workplace creche for pre-school age children (babies - 5 years).
It was set up about 10 years ago. A group of single mothers got together, with a CWU Rep, to
give them advice, and canvassed the staff.
They did a survey to find out how many staff would use a creche, what hours they would need
and how much they would be able to pay for a place.
They approached Management with the results but were told that RM did not want to get involved
in child care, and did not have the accomodation for a workplace creche.
However, their endeavours coincided with proposed major building work at Mount Pleasant,
including the demolition of the old Parcel Section building, for which planning permission was
needed from Islington Council.
The CWU Branch put in a submission to the Council that planning permission should be dependent
on RM finding suitable accomodation for a workplace creche. Islington Council let RM know that planning
permission would not be given unless plans for a creche were included in the proposals.
RM did indeed manage to find the space for a creche, and agreed to subsidise the cost of running it.

The creche is open to preschool age children of parents who work at Mount Pleasant, and
neighbouring DO's. It is open from 0600-2000. I believe the cost is £160 pw for each child (full time),
with RM paying half the cost. There are also part time places.
A couple of years ago RM wanted to close the creche (despite having boasted about it in the Courier).
The CWU Branch mounted a campaign to save it, involving local MPs and GLA members.
Alan Leighton did intervene to stop the closure, and I understand that additional funding was made
available from Government sources.
It is a great resource for working parents, particularly single parents, who might not otherwise be able
to work.

I realise that this would be impractical for Delivery Offices, but perhaps some of you in Mail Centres
should consider trying to follow us in getting a workplace creche.

I wish something like that was available when I had my kids, I had to resign as there were no resources for childcare back then.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets
