Stamp cancelling?

Post by Pmn »

How exactly does this work? I've only really thought about this since starting the job and getting letters back to my frame saying 'Return to Sender' etc. In this case, hasn't the same stamp basically been used twice - so what is to stop people re-using them (if they were sad enough!) for other things? Or am I just being really dopey and missing the obvious?

No, you're right.

People HAVE been re-using Stamps. They're making a big thing about it at the moment, on Big Brother TV.

Right but aren't there meant to be machines that reject such letters or whatever? And if so, how then do the return to sender/gone away letters get through the system twice?

The phosphor bars in the stamps lose efficiency when they've been processed through the machinery, and if someone tries to reuse them (even if they haven't been cancelled) the CFCs will reject them to box 16. From here, with the rest of the unstamped rejects and RTS's they're manually handled and inspected to see if forwarding/surcharging is appropriate, or even passing to the revenue protection team for assessment.

if you deliver a stamp that hasnt been stamped then your supposed to take a pen and run a diagonal line over it to void in.
but yes they can go through the system several times..
ive had dead letters , forwarded letters and even redirections come back to me several times .

forwarded letters are the things that bugs me..you by a stamp one way yet its an obligation from postcomm that we then forward the letter if asked .but if they have been opened or the names changed you can surcharge them.no wonder stamped mail never has made money.

ive had items ive redirect come back to me several times because there still a computer bar code telling it to come to me..even though ive practically painted the envelope with blue crayon

its the price of automation

1 can only remember 2 Kill Offs coming back to in 4 years I must have been lucky. What gets me though is when the customer kills off a letter by doing nothing to the front of the envelope just putting a note on the back. That happened once and when I delivered the letter, having not noticed it was a KO, the bloke came out of the house and said are you blind. I said no I said we only read the front as we cant check every one of 2000 + letters every day. I still refused to take it back though because of the way he spoke to me and I told him so. No complaint was made and now all KO from him have the address obscured and a "Please RTS" message. :Very Happy

Don't know how your MC does it, but as I've said, in ours the team sorting the CFC rejects deals with the mail as appropriate, and if they choose (wrongly) to put the deads RTSs etc back in with the live mail, you'll keep getting it indefinitely.

If you read the post then you'll see that slimpikin (aka cantype) works in delivery not in a MC and that he was complaining about re directed mail coming back to him instead of being sent to the new address (because the machine reads the barcode which he tries to delete), so before you go insulting others then you should read carefully the post (after all you don't like it whenever people insult you).

[so before you go insulting others then you should read carefully the post (after all you don't like it whenever people insult you).

There's was no insult implied or intended in that post, and rereading it I still can't see anything that could be taken that way.
Maybe you should take a leaf out of your own book before preaching to me, unless it's just another excuse for a pop................

If you don't think that was meant as an insult then you really need to go on another diversity course :hmmmm and what makes it worse is that you insulted one of those that think like you (schizoid man)
