im looking at my trousers right now .if you all look and believe his button popped off .that button can be moved a good three inches over. QUOTE"

Moving the button does not work, i once done that years back and because it was out of line the zip did not stay up!!! If someone told me to take my shorts of in those words i would be on to a solicitor! My point in i agree about wearing uniform but if someone has stepped out of line they should deal with it in a CORRECT MANNER! Rant over. :speak to the hand

I like nice baggy trousers that i can breath in ! I have mine ordered, it was meant to be 2day i think we all had to be in uniform but i have not got my new trousers yet so i was not in full uniform 2day!

I dont see the point in worry about trousers so long as we have correct top and mayb hat on that should be all that matters. :cuppa
if your wearing shorts with addidas all over and the rest says royal mail .some people as we all know are going to assume that we are either sponsored by them or work for them.plus criminals may be able to get some royal mail clothes to commit crimes but if you've got it all on theirs less chance of imposters.....LATERAL THINKING

uniform is for several reasons not just to look uniform

the correct manner was followed, when asked to leave he refused, hes now out of health and safety law.if he doesn't obey the guy legally responsible for him and his colleagues he should be removed asap before he endangers them any further .that's the law.like it or not

I had put on a little weight and broke the button on my work trousers so I wore the shorts, which I have been wearing for the past three " he said.

"I didn't leave immediately because I was trying to find spare trousers or shorts. I'm proud of the work I do on my rounds. I didn't want to let anyone down.

He added he was unable to wear Royal Mail-issue shorts and trousers because he is between sizes and they are all "either too small or too big". He turned up for work again on Tuesday but was hauled in front of bosses and given a dressing down because he was still wearing the shorts.

If this was me and im a female i would feel very violated and with most managers being male i would feel un easy telling them about if i was inbetween sizes, i had put on a bit of weight also a while back and that was my reason but i was not going to tell them that!!!! Now they fit me better but still not great, as a girl i hate to feel uncomfortable.
and thats what the guy who had to be escorted off the premises said....believe it not a jot. he wasnt made to take them off.do you seriously think he was walking about in his pants..he could have just gone home

im looking at my trousers right now .if you all look and believe his button popped off .that button can be moved a good three inches over.
and back to the point he didn't phone for replacements .he has more than one pair of trousers.

he couldnt wear them cos his button fell off ,he couldnt wear them cos he was between sizes well which is it..lying through his teeth to save his job..the manager bit back (probably as i said is happening at my do)and hes the one bitten
Your point about the Union Militants always taking the workers side and knocking Royal Mail without reason may be a good one, but we can only rely on the facts as presented.

As a counter you have no idea if he has ordered more uniform and it has not turned up, we have no idea if the manager in question has approached him before about it, we have no idea if he has or has not asked if it was OK for him to wear the shorts. We have no idea if the practice is widespread at the DO. We have no idea if the trousers broke without giving him time to repair them. My point is that we will never have the full facts as we were not there. So if it is unreasonable to take the Unions side surely its therefore also unreasonable to take Royal Mails side also.

I and others post their opinions on the facts we are able to get, sometimes we have to make assumptions and sometimes those assumptions prove to be wrong, but there is nothing inherently wrong in presenting your own opinion. After all a Forum is designed so that people, ill-informed, biased or plain wrong can post their own opinions and slant or any subject not breaking the rules.

Perhaps if there are Union Fanatics on this forum, some are of the opinion that there are also Royal Mail fanatics. Some people are blind to others views and fanatics on either side will always be guilty of that.

I myself question both Royal Mail and the Union when I disagree with them. If either get something right then I will praise them. But to label a person a fanatic just because their opinion differs from your seems a dead approach to learning from others, and will limit any meaningful discussion.

So let say we get 10 or more posties that have mayb got 1 item on which is of not royal mail issue, what the heck so hey just send all 10 or so home to get sorted and the mail and walks will just get done by themselfs!!yea! great correct manner! what should happen is an informal warning should be issued to begin with. Like me i live 15 miles away from my office!!! And just think of the stress this way of dealing with things would cause, not just to the postie with wrong uniform but to the rest who are left to do extra sorting while the 10 or so postmen go home to change and have a cuppa or like me travel 15 miles!!!!!!!

everybody knows the rules .they CHOOSE to come in with the wrong uniform.not the manager.and as ive said previously if its anything like my do,some of us do it on a regular day to day basis and until our manager snaps they'll keep on doing it.
but i bet the rest in this mans do are all wearing their uniforms today

'Man in shorts' row: Postie given £30 to buy new pair

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

Published Date: 01 May 2008
By Wayne Bontoft
The postman at the centre of a row over wearing the wrong shorts to work was last night dispatched to Northampton town centre and told to buy a new pair by his Royal Mail managers.
Adam Williamson, aged 27, from Fullingdale Road, Headlands, was escorted out of Royal Mail's sorting office at Crow Lane on Tuesday by the police after a row erupted with managers about his non-uniform shorts.

After confining Mr Williamson to indoors work because of his unsuitable attire yesterday, managers finally gave him £30 and ordered him to buy a new pair of shorts.

The postie, who has worked for Royal Mail for 12 years, last night described the row as ridiculous, but said he hoped his new shorts would put an end to the matter.

He said: "The whole thing just came out of nowhere, it's unbelievable. And to be taken away in the back of a police car was just embarrassing.

"When I turned up at home with the police I could tell people thought I'd been stealing post or something."

Police called in as 'man in shorts' row escalates - click here

The non-uniform shorts Mr Williamson was wearing were the correct shade of navy blue and the correct length.

He decided to wear them because the standard issue Royal Mail shorts he was given last year no longer fitted.

But the shorts fell foul of Royal Mail rules because they had the number 90 printed on them.

In an attempt to solve the problem, Mr Williamson's wife, Leanne, stitched up the hem of the offending garments, hiding the logo. But he was still not allowed to be seen by the public.

He said the whole affair had created a lot of upset both for him and his wife, who is seven months' pregnant and also a postie.

He said: "They refused me access to the public because they said I was unacceptably dressed and I would have to stay inside at the depot all day.

"But the whole thing's just been really upsetting. My wife saw me being taken away by the police and it just left her in tears."

In an attempt to resolve the dispute, Royal Mail told Mr Williamson to buy new shorts from either Marks & Spencer or Debenhams.

But after searching the town he ended up picking a £15 pair from BHS.

He said: "I just can't believe the whole thing. When they threatened to phone the police I never thought they'd do it.

"That's the last thing you want at work. All we want is to get the post out."

Royal Mail last night said they also hoped the matter was now dealt with.

A spokesman for the company said: "The police are no longer involved and we are now resolving this issue internally while, of course, doing all we can to continue delivering the mail with our people wearing a uniform that we're very proud of and that our customers expect to see when we call at their address."

this guy should be sack as an example.
and heres why
he didn't need to wear shorts hes got trousers .
he could have called up uniform before and asked for them.we all know the numbers on our payslips.
when asked to leave to change he didn't.
when asked to leave for the day he didnt, forcing the manager to have him escorted off the premises perfectly legally.
manager is ultimatly legally responsible for all health and safety and the building ,if someone doesn't do as there told then they are a threat to everyone elses health and safety and must be shown the door
he could have bought shorts without a logo.royal mail cant be seen to be advertising products(yet)4 pounds from matalan buys you a pair of half length shorts.i have several.nothing on them

yet again nobody seems to think about how it went down just how its reported and blaming royal mail for instilling a fear culture ready for privatisation. like the pissing postie who wasnt actually working .pathetic

That's quality,he's wearing shorts AND a fleece :left:

While i completely agree that calling the old bill was a bit over the top(or was it going to kick off!)he does look a state, those shorts look terrible.
My RM shorts are a size too big so they are more comfortable for me and i wear a belt, was it that hard him to do.
Sorry but some of this is bullshit.
Some of the guys i work with look a right state in the s**t they wear,if i was a manager i'd pull them up as well.
Although i'd give them time to sort themselves out.

You get a uniform, fecking wear it!!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

its something that surprised me with rm that the 'dress code' is very lax
no requirement to shave(which suits me!)
no rules on earings,tats etc
loose rules on uniform really and mainly on wearing proper shoes for H&S
many posties in my office wear worn out shirts, ripped jackets etc and often loo a state!

Surprised they didn't ask him to lose the tattoo on his leg as well, unless it says RM of course.

I've heard this argument a million times - with just as many excuses and the same with footwear. Though the latest "between sizes", what crap. The button came off my work pants - how many pairs of pants had he - just the one? I was a soldier and we always said there was 2 sizes - too big or too small. If you wanted to look as smart as possible we would have them tailored to fit at our own expense of course, not turn up in something similar.

Someone said these work pants are too hot! Too hot - half the time it feels like I have no trousers on when the wind blows - I have heard wearing women's tights under them helps BUT just imagine if you were run over and had to go to hospital!!!!!

He's not done any worse than most of the guys in my office who are wearing RM kit from several different uniform issues - and we have now been told that the latest one will be phased in as older kit is given out - so we will have charcoal trousers with a possible selection from 3 different coloured shirts and possibly red fleeces with orange hi-vis stormcoats. The fashion police will have us off the streets in no time.

On another note on the shoes he is wearing - probably a comfortable and safe choice !!!
Just as the soles on my latest RM shoes have worn enough to become relatively safe - the backs of them have worn through.
We wish to serve - but we will not be servile
