i have only been with the company for about 2 years and someone who has been there many years is belittling me and being abusive using offensive language, raising his voice and shouting insults at me!

what should i do?

If you are in the union go and see a union rep or if you do not want to do this you can phone up the RM or the CWU bullying and harassment line or go and see your manager. Do not suffer in silence

Have you tried explaining to him, that he is upsetting you, and ask him to stop. Sometimes it works.

If he doesn't stop after that, then use the Helpline. And remember, none of us likes a Bully. The sooner Bullies like him are stopped, the better.

the shouting and swearing sound familiar...bit like my DO in the morning...

either have a discreet word with the gentleman (if you can call him that) and/or speak to your line manager... thats what id do if i were you.

but i suppose it depends if there is some reason he is being a t**t towards you

Obviously depends what type of person you are?

Tell your fellow workers/union rep/manager etc

If not just simply say 'what's your problem with me' 'if you've got nothing good to say - say nothing at all'

Don't lower yourself to their level

If you are in the CWU go to the CWU website and read the Royal Mail Bullying and Harassment Policy. Then if you are determined to put a stop to this cretins behaviour ask your DOM / Line Manager for a H1 Form.
