Police called to look into postman's shorts

A postman, probably not wearing inappropriate shorts A postman was escorted home by police following a row after he turned up to work in the wrong shorts, the Communication Workers Union said today.

The employee at a Royal Mail sorting office in Northampton is thought to have been wearing non-Royal Mail issue blue shorts when he arrived at work yesterday morning.

The man refused to go home from the sorting office in Great Billing, Northampton, to change his shorts.

His managers then called police to escort him off the premises, union representatives said.

The row has sparked criticism from the Communication Workers Union (CWU) who say the managers' response was a complete 'over reaction'.

Mick Fitzmaurice, CWU branch secretary for Northamptonshire, said the man had been wearing navy blue shorts similar to Royal Mail style because he had not been given official ones.

He said the row had started when managers tried to send the man home without pay.

He said: 'He just can't believe what happened.

'What would normally happen is management would contact the union.

'I'm confident had they done that it's something we would have smoothed over in two minutes or less.

'They sent him home without pay and then called the police to escort him off the premises.

'We had a meeting with management yesterday after the incident and tried getting them to see sense and bring this back to some kind of normality but that meeting didn't go as well as we hoped.

'A similar thing happened today. He turned up in the same shorts and was told he couldn't go out on his run. He's been kept in the office.

'The thing is, Royal Mail have not actually provided him with the uniform shorts.

'He is wearing as near as he can. They are navy blue shorts and they have a little sports logo on them.

'He has turned them up to avoid the logo being seen.'

Mr Fitzmaurice said they planned to demand a review to be held in the sorting office in Crow Lane.

He added: 'While this was going on and they were wasting police time and everyone else's time, the delivery did not actually go out until 1.30pm yesterday so people wouldn't have been getting their post until teatime.

'What we will be definitely doing is requesting a complete Industrial Relations Review in the Crow Lane office because I think this is just the tip of the iceberg.

'We've heard today they have given him £30 to buy new shorts but they'll still just be blue shorts.'

Northamptonshire Police today confirmed they had been called to the office yesterday morning.

A spokesman said: 'We received a call in respect of a staff member acting in a disruptive manner yesterday morning.

'An officer attended and it was resolved and the person was taken back home.'

Lee Barron, Midlands regional CWU secretary, said: 'The thing is, they were not disproportionate in colour. If someone turned up in a pair of Bermuda shorts you could see what the problem is.

'The normal process is that they would have a chat with him and advise him not to do it again.

'To phone the police to get them escorted just smacks of over-reaction. It just epitomises the managerial attitude they have. It would have delayed the post and everything.'

A Royal Mail spokesman said: 'The police are no longer involved and we are now resolving this issue internally while, of course, doing all we can to continue delivering the mail with our people wearing a uniform that we're very proud of and that our customers expect to see when we call at their address.'

sorry to sound like a broken record but I've seen all this in another service and union . The idea is to "tighten up " , instill discipline into people and soften staff up for privatization even though reactions to things may seem draconian , you will get a union bashing agenda and RM would like a "Culture of fear " or "Culture change " , if he got sent home Mgt are under pressure from on high , someone is trying to make a name for himself and trying to impress .



The other problem is that those giving the orders , predictably don't understand the job and /or understand how the PO works .

We'd a very ambitious ex graduate in charge being a complete pain in the arse , threatened to put staff on charges for not having Paisely Knots in Ties and the correct ones had to be hurriedly found , the other one was threatening safety critical staff acting as look outs with loitering charges FFS .

There was a jobs for the boys culture and the chain of command was poor and top heavy so justification of jobs was the order of the day .

They tried to put all these petty misdemeanours together to justify a more serious charge . You end up with managers and staff frightened of their own shadow and people worrying about f*** all .It gets very petty and meanminded .

RM will be looking to get him on a more serious offence for calling RM's bluff and putting them in the papers /internet , they won't back down , they can't ! with that top down regimented style .

I have the same problem with my Uniform Trousers. My old ones were far too tight, and the ones I have now are too big. I have to wear a Belt with them, or they fall down. Yet when I buy Trousers from the Shops, they fit perfectly.

Instead of causing him and his Wife such stress and embarrasment, they should have calmly explained that he should get the next size Uniform, and wear a Belt. This is despicable behaviour on the part of the managers. Particularly as his Wife is pregnant, and should be avoiding stress.

there's a uniform for a reason.i bet it will turn out hes not only been told before but alot in the same place ahve been told repeatedly.i know our managers always telling us we got the wrong stuff on but being week she never does anything about it but eventually she will snap and do exactly the same thing because we all taking the piss.and thats because she hasn't done anything about it...circular argument.

he didn't need to wear shorts hes got trousers .
he could have called up uniform before and asked for them.we all know the numbers on our payslips.
when asked to leave to change he didn't.
when asked to leave for the day he didnt,forcing the manager to have him escorted off the premises perfectly legally.
manager is ultimatly legally responsible for all health and safety and the building ,if someone doesn't do as there told then they are a threat to everyone elses health and safety and must be shown the door

Well i think they are tighten up for some reason. I hate the r mail trousers, i have not worn them in years , i find them 2 warm and i hate the shape of them! I like nice baggy trousers that i can breath in ! I have mine ordered, it was meant to be 2day i think we all had to be in uniform but i have not got my new trousers yet so i was not in full uniform 2day!

I dont see the point in worry about trousers so long as we have correct top and mayb hat on that should be all that matters.

If this was me and im a female i would feel very violated and with most managers being male i would feel un easy telling them about if i was inbetween sizes, i had put on a bit of weight also a while back and that was my reason but i was not going to tell them that!!!! Now they fit me better but still not great, as a girl i hate to feel uncomfortable.

im looking at my trousers right now .if you all look and believe his button popped off .that button can be moved a good three inches over.
and back to the point he didn't phone for replacements .he has more than one pair of trousers.

he couldnt wear them cos his button fell off ,he couldnt wear them cos he was between sizes well which is it..lying through his teeth to save his job..the manager bit back (probably as i said is happening at my do)and hes the one bitten
