No but the Union rep should at least get a feeling from the members and if there is majority support for these members positions then the rep should run with it, even if they disagree with said position. After all Reps are there to present the members majority view not their own.

Trouble is some people get a position and turn into Napoleon. Pushed the issue of Saturday start times with a local rep ,he made it quite clear it was not of any interest to him. Where do I take it from there?

where and how the fuxk do these people become reps if its not the members they listen to. i had to sign a deal that the members voted to take... some of us didnt want it but because the majority of the members wanted to take the deal that was it i had to sign it as instructed by the members.

Hey Peachy see you are a new rep - plenty of comment here that says listen to your members.

That is very good advice for you to follow.

When almost 100 members out of 109 ask for the rep to be removed because he is signing off unacceptable changes to our terms and conditions, he shoud listen and stand down.

He shouldn't be backed up by the hierarchy, both managment and CWU.....

Thanks for your advice Wranglered being new to all this i take all the advice i can. I agree you should listen to your members and i would like to think i do that. what sort of agreements that are so bad has your rep done. and when is he up for re-election.

If as you are saying that the area rep wont get involved and the branch are not taking it seriously enough get everyone who is not happy to sign a letter outlining your concerns about the rep and telling the branch secretery unless you get some action soon (give them a Date) you will all resign from the union and send it to the branch, copy to CWU HQ. The branch sec will do something pretty quick,

remember the union is the members

border scot - first petition signed and rejected by branch. second petition gone in with exactly what you suggest...we will wait and see...hopefully not for very long or else more of our terms and conditions get signed away...

lots of ideas being mooted on what we could do with the Â£15k we pay into the union coffers each year.....a lot of money for no proper representation and ignoring our wishes...

I am a rep and there is sometimes that you make decisions for others. If you have either a proper direct relationship with the members or an immediate voting scheme on your shift then these problems shouldnt arise. We are there to rep. you the members. The best way is having direct votes on all issues that affect members, on the floor through work place votes. I dont have them but i still know what is the most democratic method. If you are genuine then make your complaint to the NDC(if they will do anything about it). I would caution, that potentially RM management will support a claim to CWU management about a "disruptive rep". Be careful what you go for.

Exactly. No vote. Unilateral decision by rep and area rep. Failure to consult the members. Look forward to the excuses they will try and come up with.

Well the HQ party responded to our concerns...sub rep stood down.....new ballot to take place....management honeymoon over and we are still in the CWU, for the time being at least....interesting how only the threat of withdrawing subs finally saw some action....

It's terrible that it had to come to threats, before they would do as you asked. I was under the impression that the Union is supposed to represent the MEMBERS interests. It shouldn't have to come to threats for them to do so.
