Re: Martin Walsh DGSP:A message to new entrants in Royal Mail Group
If new entrants vote no to the 1.75%, what happens then? Just a 3% rise like the legacy? And back to square one in January when discussing the next (or first) step in equalisation?

Seeing that they are getting a separte ballot maybe if they reject the rise will be asked to go on strike?Jonathan Alsatian wrote: ↑25 Apr 2026, 19:21If new entrants vote no to the 1.75%, what happens then? Hard to tell how many will actually vote when the moment comes though.Sean06 wrote: ↑25 Apr 2026, 20:05Seeing that they are getting a separte ballot maybe if they reject the rise will be asked to go on strike?Jonathan Alsatian wrote: ↑25 Apr 2026, 19:21If new entrants vote no to the 1.75%, what happens then? Voter apathy, even when it is only about them, is chronic

What % of new entrants are in the union and what % of legacy are in the union?

Thinking about that scenario of a new entrants strike. Given they make up a small amount of the workforce, would a strike only involving the new entrants even make a big impact. RM would just ship in some agency staff and the legacy staff who wouldn't be involved in that strike would show them the ropes.

It is mostly NEs in DPR so if they went on strike, the precious tracked wouldn’t be delivered, so that’s an awful lot if agency they’d have to employJonathan Alsatian wrote: ↑25 Apr 2026, 20:44Thinking about that scenario of a new entrants strike. I think paid breaks will be gone completely in a couple of years, in part due to the amount of employees who never take a break anyway. Have a quick tally up in your office, probably around 20% take a full breakDryPop wrote: ↑28 Jul 2025, 23:58Every time I hear Martin speak I'm always left with more questions. He always manages to trickle something different in without actually confirming anything.![]()
In fairness to him the agreement always stated these 3 & 6 month stages so I can see where he's coming from but no one on this shitty contract will be happy until its equalised.
If I was to guess to what is likely to happen in September it would be the paid breaks being the first step.
Since the last strike everything has been about revenge regardless of the damage to the company and brand.

Some offices have about 40% non legacy workers, unless action is taken now it will be too late. A work to rule by everyone would be a startJonathan Alsatian wrote: ↑25 Apr 2026, 20:44Thinking about that scenario of a new entrants strike. In a message recently it was said that 54% of new entrants are in the union.

I’m expecting turnout to be very low even though their vote on pay is just about them.Neverwasadoor wrote: ↑26 Apr 2026, 07:24In a message recently it was said that 54% of new entrants are in the union.

You can practically map out areas that have a high % of staff on new contracts based on what happened 2 years ago with the network window change or whatever it was called. That was the final straw for many, with 4pm and 4:30pm finishes. How many people that finish currently at say 2pm would hang around in the job if it changed to 4pm?Thommo44 wrote: ↑26 Apr 2026, 07:22Some offices have about 40% non legacy workers, unless action is taken now it will be too late. I was talking to one of the new-er guys last week and he was very vocal in his belief we should be out like the London Underground. I was surprised because most simply quit once they've been pissed off enough. It did prompt me to ask 'you weren't here during the strikes, were you?'

Using numbers from the 2023 ballot:
There were 111,670 members eligible to vote out of 129,135 in operational grades (82%). New contracts were negligible at the time because no significant recruitment was conducted for the frst sixth months. Pre-2022 membership has likely declined and CWU accounts are more recent but you'd have to extract postal division members from the total number of members (the next largest component of which is BT).
The machine stops.
