Most non drivers are prob in there 50s 60s , who are maybe struggling as it is , they will be driven into the ground with the amount / days mail they will have to keep delivering . Well done our union
None of our HCT bods are in that age group. On the contrary they're all youngsters on the new contracts with one or two legacy in their 40's.

All our 50/60 yrs bods are singleton drivers. Their complaint is about the constant getting in/out of wagons.

Each office demographic will be different.
Our HCTs have predominantly oldies that are already struggling round, other oldies on some of the shittest duties in the office also already struggling, these that are struggling and are quite senior can't get anywhere near the nice rural/singleton duties that traditionally you could only get after building a decent amount of seniority (remember those days)
Won’t a re pick of duties enable the more senior guys to take a rural/singleton van?

I was in my mid-20s when P&L was introduced and getting in and out of the Combo all day was very quickly wrecking my back. In America they have those vans you can step in and out of. We're forever reinventing the wheel, why not the door...

When I've been doing Tracked on a housing estate I've often a van with sliding doors would make sense!

I've seen in the past, don't remember if it was USPS or another courier in the US, used vans with shelves inside that they used to organise their route.

USPS Oshkosh Delivery Truck: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcfHf94Jz_Y replacing the Grumman LLV you see in all the US TV shows/films.

What's just as interesting is the multi-address 'on the street' mailboxes. Didn't realise that the postie opened one single door that opens up access to multiple single address DP's in one go.

We just get a shiny mat meaning parcels just slide around, with the grey trays we use now far to small to hold most of packets etc we now deliver.

How big a difference would having vans like that have?

Since we moved to transit-style vans from circa 2019 onwards it's not as bad getting in and out, compared to Car Derived Vans like the Combos which were just too low to the ground.

That said, the move away from the Combos had nothing to do with staff wellbeing and everything to do with it being impossible to get a P&L duty in one anymore. Last time we had a breakdown and were given a Combo we had to return to the unit for the oversized. They meant to be pouch boxes on wheels!
