A POSTMAN who was secretly observed cycling around visiting friends instead of delivering the mail had stored bags of undelivered letters all around his home, a court heard.
Anthony Ashmore was told that the public had a right to trust postmen and that he had shown no regard for people who had failed to receive their post.
Ashmore (55), of Orpwood Road, Kitts Green, admitted three charges of failing to deliver the post.
Deputy District Judge Miller, sitting at Birmingham Magistrates Court gave him an 18-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
He also ordered him to pay £480 compensation and £720 costs.
He said he had taken into account his problems with alcohol and that he had never been in trouble before.
John Dove, prosecuting, said Ashmore had been a postman at the Kitts Green delivery office for over 22 years until he was suspended last December.
During 2007, he said, there had been a number of complaints from addresses on the defend-ant's walk about not receiving mail and in December last year he was kept under secret observation.
Mr Dove said during one day he was seen to only spend one and three quarter hours delivering while for the rest of his shift he was observed doing other things.
Mr Dove said Ashmore, who was initially suspected of stealing from the mail, was arrested at his address where 82 undelivered items were found while a further 905 were discovered in a box postmen use to store mail during a round.
When his house was searched, bags of mail were found in his lounge, kitchen and garden shed.
Sarah Brinklow, defending, said the mail which had been recovered had now been forwarded to the people it was supposed to reach.
She said the offences occurred because of a combination of long working hours, a feeling of being unable to cope with the job and marriage difficulties which had led to Ashmore increasing his alcohol intake.

Yep at 55 he is going to find it very difficult to get another job as well paid as this one - unfortunately he will probably end up shelf stacking at some supermarket.custard wrote:22 years in and to end it like that.
very silly
I feel sorry that he was having problems but it still does not explain his laziness of not actually doing most of his walk even when he was being paid for it. I think he was using its as an excuse and was trying to use it to mitigate the fact he was lazy. Of course that's just my opinion based on the story presented above.
