Where does the 4th person go ?

It will be an unmitigated disaster and the fact the union is backing it is farcical.

Either the 4th person doesn't actually exist because the office is understaffed, or someone will be going to a nearby office, or ultimately after 2 years they might be offered VR.
The idea is to have a pool of area reserves to deal with sickness spikes, resignations and (yes please) a syndicate lottery win.

The union isn't simply backing this, they were the ones who dreamt it up.
The union for some reason has decided to hatch a plan to make our lives harder and save the business £150 million.
Simply to prove it isn't their business to run (into the ground)

My guess is RM know this will fail. They could make it fail if they wanted to (as we could with any trials)
They are prepared to write off another Christmas to further weaken the union through people leaving the business or the union.
Then in future negotiations about anything at all they will bring up the fact that they listened to the CWU over USO reform and it was a disaster so they won't be listening to them ever again.
We will just watch Walsh and Ward ride off into the sunset (with Ward still muttering about expanding the role of the postal worker while the nurse is getting his jigsaw out.)

We are a trial office and most of last year and even in the past months area reps have been in and out stating this version would be a disaster. Now they are endorsing it.

I usually work overtime but if this system is the way foward i can see many just working to time. Head melting just looking at the diagram of how it works not to mention they must take us all for idiots the shite they are talking about workloads and more time off etc.

Apparently out of the group of 4 there will always be 1 persons day off apart from 1 day when I assume someone may be moved to help elsewhere,that's what we were told anyway.

RM would have to provide them with a van to go between offices as doing so in their own car would be classed as business use, either that or RM pay for them to get business use put onto their car insurance.

But the RM ODM option was, slightly, worse, if this doesn't work, which does seem likely, then RM's own proposals would have never worked.

I've no idea how the CWU is trying to sell this to its members but if it was me I'd be suggesting that if this option isn't acceptable RM will be taking executive action to impose ODM on every DO, so this is the lesser of two evils.

It's just a pity there's no real incentive like a £500(?) bonus if it's all in place by Xmas as at least we would then be getting something for voting yes, as things stand there seems no reason to vote yes. Unless they are keeping something similar up their sleeves before gauging members initial reactions?

What mech trays? If it ends up with only 1C going out from the MCs on a Friday, the 2C won't get run until the weekend and the 1C will be sent out as manual.

One of the contradictions I can’t get past is that after the strikes, RM imposed revisions and took multiple duties out of the office and made the remaining walks bigger. I presume they’ve banked those savings for the last 3 years?

But now for DM26/USO reform to actually function the COMs are saying that they need to put most of those duties back in again. So we’ve gone full circle. And I'm thinking: were those original “savings” ever genuine or were they just shifting costs into overtime, fatigue, sickness and failing duties?

It reminds me of the seasonal variations that seem to have been quietly deprioritised. These policies only look efficient on paper and it really wouldn’t surprise me if DM26 struggles to create the headline savings once real life kicks in and they need to recruit extra staff, rebuild duties or pay more overtime to keep the workloads manageable and QoS from dropping off a cliff.

Because while 2 people sharing walks may save on vans and fuel, that doesn’t make it the most efficient delivery model when they are waiting on each other compared with one postie owning one route. These cost-saving models often look strongest in spreadsheets and weakest out on the streets.

2 on van share do everything duty 1 (supposed to be 3 loops each) but only parcels+1c etc duty 2, ( again 3 loops worth each) this alternates between duties 1 & 2 daily. They also do 2 loops (so 1 loop each) of everything duty 3 and 2 loops (1 each) of parcels+1c etc duty 4.

The 3rd person on their own does 4 loops everything duty 3 and 4 loops parcels+1c duty 4

Obviously the above alternates daily mon-fri.

So in theory everyone does 4 full loops and 4 parcels loops daily, I'd have thought you'd drive round those though but who knows.

No idea if the duties will be rejigged to have exactly equal loops or what though that'll be fun.

Oh and if any of that sounds too much work then the rurals, singletons are supposed to do only half their duty everything and half parcels+1c daily so they can assist others, yeah.

Who will speak up? P&L has been in place for roughly fifteen years, so the only people with any hands-on experience of that great inefficiency who are involved in the deployment of DM26 are going to be junior COMs. Loose hay in the wind. Maybe more senior ones might have been an OPG during single delivery or earlier, but why rock the boat when you're on 50k. Ultimately, though, they'll all be under the thrall of a clueless OPL to whom the spreadsheet is sacred esoteric knowledge. If you oppose it, you just don't get the 'big picture'.

It'll be from-the-ground-up only once it has crashed and burned to the ground.

I'm sceptical (to put it mildly) about whether the pairing will cope with that level of workload.

I am absolutely certain that the person on their own has absolutely zero chance of being able to perform that workload. It is an absolute impossibility.
