New Health and Safety rep
I am thinking of putting in for the prositition of the health and safety rep, the trouble is, that the only experience I have got is when I worked in the kitchen or various titbits I ahve heard on the grapevine. Is the any reading material that I could get hold of so that I can make a valied legal point.
Also your opinion please on the issues that I have got with the office
1 Lack of pouch drops, to me the reason why people are daft enough to carry heavy bags (which is a bug bear with me) is that the no decent secure bag points
2 Increase of parcels, and the fact that managers expecting us to carry bigger and heavier parcels, shouldn't be happening
3 Staff not taking breaks when they are suppose to and staff taking breaks at the end of the duty. I never agreed with having a break at the end, I have always thought a break was to break up the shift and make you refresh.
4 R S I I know that if your in an office and you use a computer, then your suppose to walk away from the screen at least once every hour to prevent eye strain, since we do a lot of reading in our job, shouldn't it apply to walking away from frames
5 Those bloody holes in the ceiling leaking dust and aspestous, plus light bulbs never work on some frames.
6 Managers antaganising staff, I might be wrong but isn't mental health just as important as physical health
7 Rest stops, a van driver got pulled in the office because he nips home for a pee, he was delivering the next street from him, as he was bursting and couldn't wait he uses his own house, he got pulled because it wasn't his area, surely its makes more sense to use the nearest place instead of travelling 15mins on a full bladder back to the office.
8 Idiotic managers, I can't stand idiots, so why offend me by putting a moron who thinks he better then me in charge of me. At least when I was head chef I took care of my charges, plus the were vast amount of respect, the lack of respect royal mail managers show their charges is diabolicol, no wonder folk are going off sick with depression or stress

Go for it, I have just started 5 mounts ago, you will need to speak to your area h&s rep to get the ball rolling and then do some training payed for by RM. any problems you have you can pass up to area rep. you will get so stick from work mates but when they see that you are on their side it gets better.

I would check that it is asbestos falling from the tiles, if there is any in the building then there should be an asbestos register somewhere.

Contact your local council environmental health department and ask them to investigate because if asbestos is becoming airborne then that is illegal and needs to be sealed and then removed asap.

What is it?
Asbestos is the name for a group of naturally occurring silicate minerals that can be separated into fibres. The fibres are strong, durable, and resistant to heat and fire. They are also long, thin and flexible, so that they can even be woven into cloth. Asbestos has been used in consumer, industrial, maritime, automotive, scientific and building products. This includes uses in commercial and industrial buildings, schools and hospitals.
There are three main types of asbestos:
Brown- amosite
Blue - crocidolite
White – chrysotile
All three are potentially dangerous

It's very good that leaflet - probably one of the best I've seen from the CWU. Not overbearing in any way, simple and straightforward and gives very good advice.woofwoof wrote:http://www.cwu.org/uploads/documents/HS ... e-Reps.pdf

I thought everyone got a copy of that just before the strikes last year - I still have mine but then I have always been a hoarder.
