MP Chris Vince went to see Royal Mail operations first-hand

As we are in to the New Year, I wanted to update you on some of the work I have been doing on behalf of residents across our constituency.

Representing Harlow is unique.

We are a constituency of contrasts, with an urban centre facing very different pressures from our surrounding villages such as Roydon, Lower Nazeing and Sheering.

That diversity is one of the aspects of Essex that make it such a nice place to live, but it also means that the challenges residents face is not always the same, and it is vital to me that those differences are properly understood and addressed.

One issue that has been raised with me repeatedly over recent months, particularly by residents in Roydon but also across the wider constituency, is the standard of service provided by Royal Mail.

I am aware that the Christmas period is traditionally one of the busiest times of year for postal services, and I have nothing but respect for the hardworking posties who go out in all weathers to keep our communities connected.

However, that context does not excuse the level of disruption many residents have experienced.

I have heard people were receiving mail only once every two or three weeks, missing important letters, medical appointments, bills, and even Christmas cards from loved ones.

That is why, in December, just before Christmas, I visited Royal Mail locally to see operations first-hand and to meet both frontline staff and local management.

I made clear that the service being provided to residents was untenable and that urgent action was needed to address staffing shortages and delivery delays.

I am pleased that, following my representations, Royal Mail in Harlow has now opened applications for 13 new postal workers to strengthen the local operation.

This is a welcome step and should, if implemented properly, lead to a more reliable service for residents in Harlow and the surrounding villages.

This is progress, but if you will forgive the pun, the proof will be in the delivery.

I will monitor the situation and stay in touch with residents to ensure that promises translate into real improvements on the ground.

People deserve a postal service they can rely on, and I will keep pressing until that is exactly what they receive.

Chris Vince is Labour (Co-op) MP for Harlow and the villages.

Absolutely pointless having MPs visit DOs until the MPs are able to visit with no warning and see the true picture.

What's the betting the 13 jobs are just replacing 13 posties who've quit recently as there's no way RM are going to take on additional posties whilst agreeing the ODM is up in the air/probably likely to be enforced by EA later this year
