My bank(Santander) are closing in my town and the nearest branch is over 30 miles away so I’m having to change banks but I’m not sure how I go about getting my wages paid into my new bank account?
Haven’t had to worry about this before as I’m sure it was all done by filling out a form or HR 26 years ago when I first started.

Re: Changing banks
I've changed banks more time than I can remember because of the signup bonuses but each time they've taken care of everything.

Re: Changing banks
You can do it easily on the app. On the My personal info tab, then banking.

Re: Changing banks
The banks sort it all for you. I have made thousands of pounds changing banks over the last few years and getting their switch bonuses. Usually get £150-£200 per switch.

Re: Changing banks
Once you have your new account and sort code numbers, you can do it on the app.
You'll obviously need to open the new account yourself.

Re: Changing banks
You open a new bank account with a new bank, how on earth do they know who your wages come from?
People saying 'your bank deals with everything' is untrue. You can transfer standing orders, direct debits etc, (i.e outgoings) but they have zero remit to arrange payments INTO your account, i.e. wages. That is up to the customer. Otherwise you are risking the payment bouncing back/being delayed.
Currently, RM will pay your wages into your stipulated bank account, you can check these details on the app, MY PERSONAL INFO > BANKING. There you will see your current (old) bank account and sort code. You need to get a new account then go onto the RM app and change this to new account numbers.

Re: Changing banks
Payroll will get a notification with the new sort code and account number if you use the switching service. The bank do indeed know where payments are coming from. Money doesn't just magically fall in to your account.

It is good practice to update it yourself, yes, but it's the switching service being discussed here. The bank do know. They have an exact remit under the switching service. And they will forward payments made to the old details.Perseus wrote: ↑08 Feb 2026, 20:09

Re: Changing banks
Happy to be corrected
It's just been my personal experience of doing it, using 'best practice' as you say.
