Every day the line manager is taking people into the office, and monitoring performance on some people too (totally unjustified), it's like being back at middle school.

It seems like these days every manager is under so much pressure from their manager to save as many hours as possible. They probably have a target for the minimum number of hours to save or they get moved on.

I know that's a fact as each year our manager says he's been told to lose X amount of hours, I assume if he doesn't come up with a plan his manager will just cut the hours anyway?

It'll be interesting how the job evolves this year as if Tracked remains high all year then there's no way mail can be delivered daily on most duties in my DO regardless of whether the ODM is being rolled out fully or not.

The really sad fact is nearly all jobs around our pay grade and “skills” are like this. Stupid workloads that no human being should subject to in the name of efficiency so those at the top can reap the rewards. It’s barbaric when you think about it. Take our job for example, in a fair and equal world a delivery should be achievable by walking at a normal pace with maybe 15 mins to spare at the end as a thank you for walking around in all weathers throughout the year. Instead we have delivery’s 90 mins too big with an under pressure DO manager constantly questioning why we can’t do the humanly impossible day in day out.
Future generations will look back in horror at the world of work we are currently in.

The job is different for everyone. Sometimes it's light and an absolute breeze, sometimes it's busy and toxic, sometimes it's somewhere in-between...

Luckily, for the past year or so it's mostly been a breeze, but I know the USO changes to come may flip things 180 degrees. There's always that worry that things could become toxic for weeks/months or worse. I understand that anyone working with consistently toxic management and ridiculous workload would want to get the hell out.

Monday to Friday with no more Saturdays,

Full sick pay for 4 months rising to 6 months full then 6 months half which is what Royal Mail took away.

Job and knock (always a bonus)

No bullying managers (my friend works under the same manager as I'm going to) and it's a very steady job. Yes it's picking up litter, also graffiti removal, keeping up with planters in town centres, so very varied.

Better pay rises, 4% last April, 5% the year before with 1 days holiday added to your allowance two years ago.

26 days holiday + 8 bank holidays rising to 31 days after 5 years.

Better pension scheme (LGPS)

Start rate £26400 rising to £28100 after one year (my RM contract is 35 hours and I don't hit £26000 currently).

Opportunities to better yourself with many internal jobs that are advised.

Steady work at Christmas and not getting the horrible pressure which will only get much worse as parcels are up regularly now.

No more worries about USO changes which will restart very shortly now that Xmas is out of the way, this will never benefit members.


So yeah, I'm looking forward to picking up half eaten Mc'Donalds with my full PPE, the binliner and stick just to get out of the Tsunami that's around the corner in my current job.
I'm not quite sure you could ever trump that!

You forgot one other massive thing, you will never have to listen to Dave Ward prattle on about expanding the role of the postal worker and Martin Walsh explain that the uso change is actually going to be good for a postal workers fatigue. Getting out of Royal Mail is good but being able to cut ties with this ridiculous union is almost as satisfying I would imagine.
