We'll all get RM email addresses soon... Will they provide computers for employees to use, I wonder? I know quite a lot of people who have computer-free homes. A laptop for every postie?

Royal Mail will issue 180,000 staff with unique identities and email addresses as part of a self-service human resources system covering the entire organisation.

The replacement of its 18-year-old staff management platform is part of the group’s £1.2bn infrastructure revamp. It will streamline 16 separate HR daily processes such as reconciliation of timesheet data with salary information into a single SAP-based system.

OK so some on here may wonder why money is spent on this rather than direct frontline staff. Putting that aside the words comeing from Robin Dargue suggests that RM are getting a grip on what it is to run projects of this scale and how to successfully implement IT systems, which is needed to bring RM into the 21st century.

I hope that employees on here will get an improved HR service in the future. However, SAP is notoriously known for being a standardised system so don't be surprised if there is a move to more standard terms and conditions, which may not benefit all concerned.

Guess what,I would not be shocked in the slightest if an RM reform proved detrimental to my terms and conditions.
And to hit the problem right on the head ,take a look at one loved phrase "Human Resources", says it all ,pound of salt ,dozen nails ,van, litre of petrol. 21st century ,that attitude was well known to W.Wilberforce

If they make the royal mail email address and system available at home with all the safeguards it could be a good move in my opinion.

It would mean we would get direct mailings and be able to get RM info while at home. It would also make ordering uniform far easier. There are many benefits to having your corporate email address. You could fill out time sheets at home on line and the manager would then authorise it.

But there are drawbacks - if they do let us access it at home will that mean we will all have to get web cams so that we can report sick on line.

If however, they do not allow access at home I hope they provide enough access points at work as our DO has upwards of 300 +, can you imagine the queues to use the computers before you go out on delivery.


Royal Mail better think this through carefully and make sure every "t" is crossed and every "i" is dotted otherwise is going to be messy.

I won't be using their email address or anything to do with IT unless it is in work time and on work systems. I just want to go to work, do the job properly and come home and forget about RM. I don't give them my mobile number, they have my home number with caller-id on, and a answer machine, that is all the info I want them to have access to.

I assume you will have an online user account and somewhere that they can send messages to relating to your job. I am unaware of any company providing email addresses for out of work time. THe only experience where this happens is when an employee has a laptop and is there mobile. A postman will not be in this category. I would suspect that this self-help system will allow you to order clothing (eventually) check your pay details, change them etc...

However, there will be job losses within HR which no one on here seems to have mentioned. There were and are hundreds of people processing your pay each week, taking orders and answering questions about pensions, sick leave etc..... Once this system is in I'd be suprised if it wasn't outsourced with just Head Office HR functions remaining within the business. Look up the three-box model and you'll understnad the structure in Royal Mail.
