Strike ‘put city’s mail site at risk’
http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpoo ... -20804203/
THE Royal Mail strike last year could threaten the future of Liverpool’s Copperas Hill sorting office, it was warned today.
During a visit to the city, Nigel Stapleton, chairman of postal services commission Postcomm, said the damage caused by the unofficial action would form part of the review of postal services.
Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) leaders already fear the review could result in the closure of Liverpool’s Copperas Hill sorting centre and relocation of its work to Warrington – a move they defeated 11 years ago.
Mail chiefs are expected to announce their proposals soon, however, CWU leaders have vowed to press for a new mail centre within the city if Copperas Hill is targeted.
But Mr Stapleton said Royal Mail’s first concern must be to improve efficiency, or face the same swingeing cutbacks facing the Post Office network which will see sites slashed from 18,000 six years ago to 12,000, including 60 closures across Merseyside, Wirral and Cheshire.
He said: “There is clear evidence that some people left the market because of the strikes.
“I am very understanding of the CWU wish to protect jobs, but at the same time, last year’s strikes cause a lot more disruption in Liverpool than any part of the country, which Royal Mail must take into account.â€

I wondered how long if would be before the Anti Union Fanatics
would start to blame the strikes last year. I wait with bated breath as well for our resident Union and Anti Union Fanatics to say something.

And what prompts you to believe that Nigel Stapleton is anti-union? He is quite right, RM has a duty first and foremost to ensure mail is delivered and if by removing the 'obstruction', they can ensure it does get delivered, then RM has an obligation to follow that through. Sorry, but far too much assumption that workers call all the shots. At the end of the day it is a job. You go to work, and RM pay you money in exchange. Strike action has changed nothing. The company is modernising and if there are pockets that don't want to play ball, you can hardly be suprised if RM get a big yard broom and sweep them out - particularly when its unofficial action. Quite RIGHT that people go on strike when they're not happy about something, but once you overstep strike rules, theres every chance that you'll get bitten in the ass - and looks like they will be.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:I wondered how long if would be before the Anti Union Fanaticswould start to blame the strikes last year. To continue the metaphor. You cut out the dead wood in a tree so the rest of it might prosper. You don't then go on blindly attacking the branches and roots that help that tree survive unless you want to kill the tree.Night Tonic wrote:Modernising (in the real business world) is about cutting out dead wood and being efficient. So ditto on getting things mixed up.

Night Tonic: "Modernising (in the real business world) is about cutting out dead wood and being efficient"
Modernising in (the real business world) is about using workers as a resource to make money, its about exploitation. 'Modernising' thus isn't very modern its what capitalism has always been about. The only limit to how much the business will exploit us is how much we resist.
Liverpool showed far more fight than the leadership. Your attitude seems to be one of of complete capitulation.

I'd have to agree.
The day they invented the bulldozer, 20 blokes with shovels were out of work, as the old saying goes, and the day they brought in the first item of automation (Southampton, and it was an ALF-Seg) potentially 100 posties were out of work.
Except they weren't, as the good old UCW ensured no-one was laid off or redeployed, and that's the "benefits" we're now reaping. Fourth generation automation and still no operator grade.......
If modernisation means actually behaving like a 21st century business, then bring it on. Unfortunately, the management won't have the guts for that particular fight, and therefore will just depress the pay and conditions of all the workers in an attempt to boost profits.
To return to the "tree" example, it's akin to not chopping off the dead bits and hoping that just doing nothing means it will all be OK eventually.

NT it's quite obvious your on the dark side and your vision is somewhat blured by old st. The term 'modernisation' this term is usualy used as a smokescreen by incompetent managers etc to hide the reality of there intentions. which in this case is to undermine it's staff and create a workforce that is subserviant. Any deviation from the 'set' plans is not welcome even if it is common sense. We can see what is going wrong why can't they but the bottom line is the likes of crazier and lieton are there for the money only and don't give a stuff if it goes ti** up
