Perhaps you should consider an alternative?

Sorry, I've only just read this Thread. But perhaps there's a 3rd alternative which you could consider.

I admit, that the CWU has let us down at times. It's also true, that they have also done great things for us. But if you truly believe that they aren't representing you properly, then of course you did the right thing in leaving the Union.

However, there are alternative Unions out there which you could now join. They obviously won't have as many Members in RM, but they will still be able to represent you, if an when you need them to.

For example: I know someone who was doing a job, where there was no Union Representation. She made the brave move, of joining a Union, and getting others to join too. There is a lot still wrong in that Workplace, but at least slow progress is being made. Still, slow progress is better than no progress at all!

The most important thing for you to remember, is that Strike Action, is the LAST RESORT. It is not often used these days, although we are seeing a vast increase in it's use just at the moment. But that is because there are so many people having their Pensions decimated, and they are justifiably angry about it. But it is not a situation which is likley to continue for too much longer.

Yep, Kay the bigbird I was sacked under the attendance procedure stage 3 about a year ago, but thanks to the union I got my job back. I wish you luck.

rhino49 wrote:Your union contributions are not a personal insurance policy which you may judge to be necessary or not depending on the risks you take or face in your employment. They are a payment made in support of a principle and in support of those colleagues who find them selves in a more precarious situation than ourselves.

The principle involved is one of mutual support against a system and an employer that will take advantage of every weakness we show and will use us to their benefit and our detriment. Teebs and others have given many (small) examples of progress or the stopping of unrealistic changes and in total they have made our position more acceptable. The considerably above minimum wage rates that we get were not willingly given by Royal Mail but won for the most part by the CWU and they more than cover the payment we make weekly to the union that protects us.

My contribution may never need to be spent on a situation where I find myself needing the services of a union rep or solicitor but if it protects and supports the colleagues that I value so much either on this site, at Burslem or in any other situation where they are unfairly or illegally targeted then I consider that contribution to be well spent,

Royalwud – you have done what many others have done – accepted or decided on short term gain against the value of a long term investment. Some of our contributors on these forums have questioned the acceptance of the short term bonus payments in the last deal but for all I have seen in my office so far – it is Royal Mail that has made the big mistake. I would question the wisdom of what you have done but hope that it doesn’t backfire on you – if it does I will at least have the satisfaction of knowing that none of my contribution will be helping you out of a hole you dug for yourself.

Yes, but we are only as strong as our weakest links. If someone really doesn't believe that our Union represents his/her views, and he/she doesn't feel loyal to it. Then surely it's best for them to go elsewere isn't it?

Go else where? I dont think so. Maybe its us as members that have failed! How many of us have spoken to our workmates about the bigger picture? you know the one about trade unionism and what it truly means! And i aint talking about our plight at RM but the values of a global movement that want only to improve the lives of our fellow workers, that day to day fight against ill and unfair treatment persecution and even murder of good trade unionists around the globe? Most decent and right thinking people look at their TV screens each night and tut about the state of afairs in this country or that but never seem to make the connections between the way they are treated and the way these other people are treated but to me its all the same! Yes at the CWU we are up against it but still the fight must continue, to just give up can not be an option and a union is so much more than a local pay rise it has to be about an improvement of the daily lives of ALL because otherwise we are as bad as them the employers because we are happy about to see others how others treated as long as we are all right and very few people seem to look at the global picture including our friend here and i often wonder if these people were aware of more of the global facts if they would look at life in such a way? But hay i do tend to look at life in a strange way and that i just cant help. LOL.

I would never suggest that anyone leaves the Union Movement. I'm very sorry if that was the impression I was giving.

In my first comment on this Thread: I suggested that he use the money he's saving, to join a DIFFERENT Union, rather than leave the Union Movement completely.

Like I said: If he doesn't believe that the CWU represents him properly, and he feels no loyalty to it. Then (in my opinion) it's probably better, if he finds another one, which WILL. There won't be as many Members of any alternative Union working in RM. But that doesn't mean that they can't represent him properly. There are several Teachers Unions for example.

A Union is only as strong as it's Members. If there are people who feel no loyalty to us (the CWU), then they are a hinderance, not a help (in my opinion).

Alternative Unions

There's the GMB www.gmb.org.uk
And IWW http://www.iww.org.uk

And those are just the 2 which I have seen mentioned elsewhere on RMC. There are probably others, if you take the trouble to look.

Personally, I'm staying loyal to the CWU. But as Royalwud feels he doesn't belong in the CWU, he should (in my opinion) look for an alternative Union. One which he feels, would better represent him. The days of the "Closed Shop", are long gone.

As I said earlier: multiple Unions within one Workplace can, and indeed do work, in Education. So why wouldn't it work in RM?

I've had experience of the GMB and believe me he'd be out of the frying pan and into another. Another mob of sell out merchants.
