We were told that this is soon to be implemented but we werent told what it means...they mentioned 'Pegusus' as well but my manager couldnt tell me what it was...

Any ideas?

If a manager doesn't know what Pegasus is ? He shouldn't be a manager !!!

Its summer lapsing by another name. It could be any or all of the following.

1. 6 into 5 walks so that 5 posties share the sixth way during the summer period.

2. Covering for absences - sharing walks within normal duty time where the duty holder is absent because of sickness, annual leave or any other reason.

in both cases the extra work does not generate overtime payments but Royal Mail can only make you work your contracted hours be that 1 - 40 hours. More chances of cut off's I think especially on heavy days. Not that flexibility of efficient if the proverbial hits the fan on a very heavy day.

The Pegasus (now called Gio-route) could be that they are going to set up the summer lapsing by using that software to "fairly" spread the lapsed walks between the unlapsed walks.

Efficient summer staffing or "summer walk lapsing" is designed to use staff efficiently during periods when mail volumes are (supposedly) lower than usual. In my office this means that additional weeks holiday are made available for staff during the quieter summer period (the dates will be approx week 13 to 26), and the walks vacated by those on holiday will be split up each week and allocated to staff on duty at the rate of approximately half a row each. This should in theory bring the low volume summer walks up to near enough the contracted hours of the staff concerned thereby ensuring that they do not get the traditional paid early finishes and sunbathing sessions they have had in the past. This additional duty (which may be implemented differently in other offices) still can be refused if it is obvious that it will take you over your contracted hours but if you are one of the idiots who comes in early or misses their breaks to get a flyer - be warned - you may end up with even more to do - Royal Mail are not interested in when you start or when you leave - only when you finish !

Pegasus is a computer program that takes all the criteria of the walks in an office and rearranges them geographically for the most efficient delivery pattern, ensuring as far as possible that the walks are all evenly balanced. Make sure that your rep has been on or is arranged to be on the Pegasus training course - as managers inputting information (and there is a lot of relevant criteria) tend to cheat. Our rep is actually detached from normal duties and will attend all the Pegasus planning procedure.

First day of this grand efficient usage of summer hours and I'll be booking for it! I would hazard a guess a few othes will be too - it'll cost them more than paying someone to do the full walk..

Our DIM and her team have come up with 12 people taking part of one walk which will add 8 minutes to their day.

12x8=96 - 1 hour 36 minutes

Average walk time 3 hours 45 minutes.

Anyone spot the flaw ????????

?? umm, not sure. well our office are splitting 4 town walks to the rural men, so the town staff between us have to prep the 4 walks then the rural men take out 30 mins each, i would not wanna be doing a rural!!! They prob think that mail light and 3 hours 45 mins will still be 3 hours 30 mins

not fully sure but i think i heard it mentioned that all the new part time staff (such as myself) would be covering walks while the normal chaps are away getting a 99 cone in blackpool

partly why we were started with 5 or 6 weeks to get us trained up

however that did not come from my line manager.. came from other new starts at the training day and rumours

plus a spread over 12 dutys means some must be a fair walk from the duty being covered
so its X time travelling to the extra duty
then (cough) 8 minutes delivery time

The walk being broken up is only 1 hour 36 long?
