Thats meaningless though. The government are the main shareholder and although you may like to think of it as owned by the electorate, the government can and will do what they like with Royal Mail. Look at all the other 'publicly' owned utilities that went private. The deficit IS a barrier to a sell off, but Postcomm are highly likely to recommend a break up to force more players into the final mile and yes you're right, it will get worse - depending how you look at it.

Yes but it wasn't royal british gas or royal ....... electric was it we still go under the crown 'fact' it takes an act of parliment to do radical things with r.m does it not i think if they attempt to break it up the backlash from joe public will be unprecedented they do not repeat 'not' want others delivering there mail just ask. Yes i can see management wanting it to procure the 'quick buck' but let us not belive that the break up of r.m would be good practice shall we

Whether its good practice or not is open to argument and the 'royal' bit is only in name now. I have less years to go than most on here but I do not anticipate RM staying in state ownership or prices staying low. From my perspective I am just marking time but even some of the younger guys I work with don't see 'fighting' as a way to stop change. It will happen - regardless. In fact it already is, in case no one has noticed.

Lots talk about outcries over the splitting of Royal Mail, but you know what? I don't think they will care one way or the other. Businesses just want mail that works and they don't care WHO does it. Domestic don't use it as much these days any way. I'd love to think that the public will be furious at the splitting of RM but I just don't believe that one bit.

You're quite right in that apathy doesn't move mountains but it boils down to being a much bigger thing than just management v workers.

This is from the heart of Europe and you can only tackle all this change on that basis - not encouraging passing motorists to beep their horns. Thats why so many have given up - including the CWU. Its like trying to knock down the Berlin wall with a toffee hammer.

All it takes for that is time.

RM will (in my opinion) be split in the next few years with delivery and MC operations and from that I'd see the mail centres being privatised quite soon after that (2-5years) with the delivery ops being sold off severals years after that.
