Spending a penny in a Cardigan street proved costly for a local postman who was fined by magistrates in the town.

Alun Sidney Williams, aged 26, of Gotrel Farm, Gotrel Estate, Verwig Road, Cardigan, who was not in court sent a letter to the Crown Prosecution Service admitting the offence committed in Morgan Street on January 27.

In the letter, read out in court by prosecutor Leslie Harbon, Williams said he was a local coastguard and a conviction could damage his reputation. He said he was in line for an award for helping victims of the Gloucestershire floods last year.

"I believed wrongly that I was well away from members of the public. If I'd been given a fixed penalty I would have paid immediately. I think the officer was wrong," he said.

Fining him £60 and ordering him to pay £15 government surcharge presiding magistrate Sheila Speed said. "This was unfortunate but the police officer seems to have been correct."

You seem to forget, that as far as RM are concerned, we are just automitons. They have no concept of Human Nature, personal circumstances, or in this case, the need to empty our Bladders from time to time.

That poor Postie has had his reputation tarnished, because he was expected to do the whole Delivery, without going back to the DO. When was the last time any of you saw a Public Toilet?
The vast majority have been closed down to save money, and RM can't be bothered to make allowances for that!

Having said all that. Why didn't he turn up in Court?
Obviously it is an embarrasing subject. But surely, it's always better to turn up and plead your case in person, isn't it?

I completely agree with the problems of finding public toilets on delivery but have a look on Google Earth how far he was from the DO, 0.08 miles away surely he could have made it that far than go in what appears to be the middle of the Town.

I completely agree with the problems of finding public toilets on delivery but have a look on Google Earth how far he was from the DO, 0.08 miles away surely he could have made it that far than go in what appears to be the middle of the Town.

That's a good point. I didn't realise how close he was. I thought it was another of these rounds, where you can end up miles from the DO with no alternative facilities.

indecent exposure cases as well . The Police are on the lookout with all those New Labour Targets set , it's a "crime solved " , "crime committed ", "crime detected " etc to make the figures look good.

I could understand a copper pulling some tanked up lager lout or ladette in town for p***ing in the street and having him/her up in front of the beak : they wouldn't do it again no matter how p***ed -fair enough .

No certain low level crimes where a prison sentence is not a possible outcome, the accused are allowed to plead guilty by post but are strongly recommend in doing so to include letters of mitigation and references from "upstanding" members of the public. I personally would always attend as it shows due deference to the court and you have a better chance of a lesser punishment if you have a decent solicitor is attendance.
