PROPOSED MERGER OF MK - NN- CV MAIL CENTERES

Post by purplepostman »

Hi, we were told at MK this week that Royal Mail are looking at merging Milton Keynes mail center with Northampton and Coventry.
We were assured that nothing was agreed and that it was just a possibility and they were still looking at other options.
However I have been shown an article in Thursdays Northampton Chronicle which states that staff at Northampton were actually told it was going to happen.
We are worried that the new super duper center is going to be somewhere around Junction 15a, and Northampton staff
( ACCORDING TO THE PRESS ARTICLE) think its going to be around Junction 13.
Can anyone verify what was actually said to the staff at Northampton? :cuppa

I think junction 13 is too far away from Coventry to be a realistic consideration. Though a site there has done the rumour rounds over recent years.

mail Center merger

Post by purplepostman »

Hi Mart,
I agree with what you say. The problem is that none of us can trust Royal Mail to tell us the truth untill its a done deal. All this has achieved is put more pressure on people in the three affected offices.

If RM have any sense of decency :nervous they should give at least 18 months notice prior to any move. Bear in mind that the proposed new MC will only need around 1000 employees from the existing 2000 in the three mail centres.

Mart.
HI, I think the best outcome would be a new NN/CV depot at 15/15A, and a new MK depot at J13.
I just hope that they see sense.

They don't appear to have any qualms about shifting CV 30 to 40 miles - and Coventry is one of the larger cities in the UK - so moving MK 20 miles up the M1 doesn't seem out of the question. I hope you're right about J13 though :pray

Notice of tender for new mail centre

Post by kingtubby »

After doing a bit of digging I found the following:

http://jp.dgmarket.com/eproc/np-notice. ... Id=1793465

It's a competitive tender notice from RM for a new site located between J15 - J16 of the M1 - dated June '07
There's a lot of standard legal stuff in there but the relevant stuff is here:
SECTION II: OBJECT OF THE CONTRACT
II.1) DESCRIPTION
II.1.1) Title attributed to the contract by the contracting authority:
Northampton and Coventry Mail Centre.
II.1.2) Type of contract and location of works, place of delivery or of
performance: Works.
Design and execution.
Main site or location of works: The Centre should be located within an
area bordered to the south-west by the M1, extending 8 miles
north-eastwards. The north-western boundary extends north-eastwards 8
miles from a point on the M1, 1,5 miles north-west of J16 and the
south-eastern boundary extends north-eastwards 8 miles from a point on the
M1, 3 miles south-east of J15. Sites should also be within 15 minutes HGV
travel time to either J15, 15a or 16 of the M1. Sites in close proximity
will also be considered on their merits.
NUTS code: UKF.
II.1.3) The notice involves: A public contract.
II.1.5) Short description of the contract or purchase(s): Royal Mail
Group (RMG) requires a facility to act as a processing centre for mail
distribution operations which it believes, in order to serve the
geographical area, should be located within the area mentioned in point
II.1.2 above. RMG is seeking expressions of interest from anyone who may
have an interest in land, including options, upon which to construct
buildings for RMG, or who may have existing buildings which may be adapted
appropriately for use by RMG for mail processing operations. RMG is
considering a number of scenarios including land only, land and
construction of a shell (base) building, and land, shell and fit-out
works. RMG is willing to consider acquiring the freehold or leasehold of
land and/or buildings that are appropriate for its use having either been
developed or adapted for it.
II.1.6) Common procurement vocabulary (CPV): 45213000, 45300000,
45400000.
II.1.7) Contract covered by the Government Procurement Agreement (GPA):
Yes.
II.1.8) Division into lots: No.
II.1.9) Variants will be accepted: Yes.
II.2) QUANTITY OR SCOPE OF THE CONTRACT
II.2.1) Total quantity or scope: The selected site will need to be
capable of housing a mail processing centre to operate on a 24-hour
7-day-a-week basis. The mail centre must be capable of accommodating mail
distribution operations and must therefore include the necessary number of
dock levellers to specified elevations. The building is likely to be in
the region of 15 000 to 17 000 m² on a site of around 4 to 5 hectares. As
well as operational areas, the mail centre will include welfare and admin
areas. There will be a high vehicular flow which the site must be capable
of accommodating. The site will provide operational and private parking
with indicative details provided in the Information Memorandum. The
contract may include the execution of fit-out works for the Centre.
And this:
The present intention is that the contract should be awarded around 1/2008
with the building handed over around 3/2009.
No mention of MK in there but if you're in NN it may be of some comfort...

ONLY 500 STAFF NEEDED AT NEW MAIL CENTRE?

HI, some information regarding the meeting last night at Rathbone place has filtered through which is;
only 500 staff wanted to staff it and a decision within six weeks as to where the site is going to be.
If this is true then they will only take less than 200 from the three existing offices leaving 1500 odd staff out in the cold.! :confused

OK, thanks for the update. Presumably it'll come down to seniority if you want to move to the new place, though I know there are plenty of us who'll take EVR if it's offered (and it's any good!).

Hi, we were told Tuesday 29th that in fact only 517 full time and 156 part time staff are needed.

That potentially leaves 1400 odd staff across the three offices with a very uncertain future.!!!
