A pilfering postie who pocketed peoples’ mail including birthday cards, scratch cards, cash, a medical card, jewellery and DVDs may face jail.

Young dad Jason Hopkins, who worked at the West Reading branch of the Royal Mail in Loverock Road, stole the post over a couple of weeks earlier this year.

The 21-year-old was eventually caught out after a sting operation by the Royal Mail costing more than £1,000.

Reading magistrates heard yesterday how investigators placed two items of fake post in his sack – one containing a 10 Euro note and the other a £5 note.

They then watched and waited. The money and mail were not delivered to the bogus recipients’ homes, but notes with the same serial number as the sting money were later found in Hopkins’ possession, the court heard.

Hopkins admitted the two offfences of stealing postal packages belonging to the Royal Mail incorporating a breach of trust on Wednesday, February 6.

And he admitted between Thursday, January 24, and Wednesday, February 6, this year, stealing several packages belonging to the Royal Mail also incorporating a breach of trust.

Paul Trincas, prosecuting, said: “He was a postman at the West Reading office prior to him resigning on February 6.â€

Well if RM hire this type of loser then what do they expect. It doesn't say how long he worked for us, but at 21 years old it obviously wasn't that long. I can't understand how people could be so stupid or so low, in this day and age IF YOU STEAL YOU WILL BE CAUGHT (pay attention Mr Leighton and Me Crozier).

It's called care in the community ie royalmail take them on and they the take care of the community's mail service just like these two loon's :lfo & :cfo !.
