New Starter INfo about the Job Req'd
Hi just a quick question. I belive the Royal Mail do not take anyone on full time wat is the reason for this, i assume they must be running there buisness on overtime.Im contracted to part time 24 hours a week which to be honest is not enough but was on job seekers allowance for two weeks which was two weeks too long. Are there ways to increase your earnings ie overtime. And if overtime is available what rate of pay do you get and is overtime regularly available yor help will be much appreciated.

Overtime is paid the same amount up to 40 hours then its time and a half I think, never have done more than 40 hours, 25 hour contract my self but work around 32 hours on overtime. Regarding overtime, this varies office to office, At mine there is plenty, the only thing I dont do is ips ask your line manager they should sort you out

1st 10 hours of docket is one rate then it goes DOWN next 10 hours and so forth.
No time and a half anywhere.

Re: New Starter INfo about the Job Req'd
Its been standard pratice for a while to start new people on part time contracts. However for about 2 years now they have been brining in some weired contracts. I have heard on hear of 0hr, 1hr, 6hr, 20hr, 24hr contracts. The idea behind them is that when you are absent for any reason then they only have to pay you your contracted hours. It saves them loads of moneydave0876 wrote:Hi just a quick question. . Most offices usually have loads of overtime going though it does fall off in summer. Sometimes full timers may get someone to do part of their walks on a casual basis. Rates would have to be agreed between each party but this totally unofficial and they postie getting the walk covered must be able to trust the "casual" to do the job, otherwise its their neck on the line.dave0876 wrote:Im contracted to part time 24 hours a week which to be honest is not enough but was on job seekers allowance for two weeks which was two weeks too long. Are there ways to increase your earnings ie overtime
As above whether its available or not depends on the DO and to some degree the time of the year. As posted above OT rates start after 40 hours and I think - its time and a 1/4 dropping down to either time and 1/5 or time and a 1/6 not sure but for 1hrs overtime I got 9.09 in the 40-50 hr bracket.dave0876 wrote:And if overtime is available what rate of pay do you get and is overtime regularly available yor help will be much appreciated.

Re: New Starter INfo about the Job Req'd
I'm starting soon and on a full-time contract. However, I noticed when applying there wasn't much full-time going and certainly none without driving.dave0876 wrote:Hi just a quick question. I am on a 6hr contract but am often offered 50+ (docket)
It is a way for the loving and caring Royal Mail to
1) Not pay sick pay
2) Not pay holiday pay
3) Not pay full bonuses (pro-rata) EVEN if you have worked more hours than a full timer for months on end
They need full timers, but they would rather play god with part timers lives. Its wrong, its immoral and if I could get a job I enjoyed as much outside the office I would.
So to answer your question, I think you have as much chance as being made full time as Gordon Brown has of winning my vote.

I once worked on the railways and was a member of the RMT.In my time there we were sold down the river by the union all guards were restructured i grant we earnt a decent wage £375 for a 35 hour week sundays outside but the terms and conditions and the strings attached were a disgrace which is why i left the job.Basically we went from good terms to basically having no rights wat so ever managers always saying its a grey area in other words they qouted it any way it suited them at that paticular time.I see the CWU from wat i read on here have done exactly the same as the RMT.In two minds whether to join the union as i know for a fact the fat cats at the top within in the unions are in it for themselves but ultimately will probably join just for the legal cover. From wat i read on here the CWU should hang there heads in shame. How can a union let Royal Mail get away with taking people on part time contracts and not replacing full time positions i have no choice but to take the part time hours as im no sponger and aint staying on the dole and want a job that will keep me in employment for years to come.
