cant remember if ive already said it a fact that driver give cyclist more room overtaking if they arnt wearing helmets.
so even though all the latest evidence says helmets dont help a jot your putting yourself in more risk of getting clipped by an overtaking idiot.

as for brakes .of coarse you need brakes but if you aint got um then youll cycle in a differnt manner and wont go as fast or take as many silly chances in the traffic..im not a person to say you must have this and that im more about using your brain and compensating..adapting to circumstance.the only thing i can say you cant be without is lights and hi vis.

if they cant see you it dont matter a rats arse if you got brakes or tyes or bell or helmet.your a goner .
I'm probably not expressing it very well. But my point is, that if you have all the effective safety equipment, and it's in full working order, you minimise the risk of an accident. You can also possibly reduce the severity of any head injuries with a Helmet. Although, I'm not as sure as I was about that, after reading the information provided in this Thread.

You can never totally avoid the risk of accidents. It's just not possible. All you CAN do, is take whatever sensible steps you can, to minimise the risks.

I was cycling to do on duty and my bike slipped and I lost controlled and went head first into a tree, I was wearing my helmet and my helmet was cracked down the center. So wear the helmet

A question, suppose a sikh using a bike for deliverly can royal mail force him to use a helmet and if they can't or can't put him on a conduct charge then isn't it discrimination against a non sikh?

I'd be interested to hear what RM would do in case of an employee being in an accident and
1. Not wearing a helmet which had been issued, employee injured
2. Not wearing a helmet and no helmet had been issued, employee injured
3. Wearing a RM issued helmet, employee injured
4. Wearing a helmet not issued by RM (no helmet issued), employee injured

If the employee was injured and caused to have time off work what would happen with the amount of sick leave, stage warnings, compensation and employer's liability?

Also if safety equipment is issued why would anyone not want to use it? A bit like a builder not wearing steel toe capped boots because they're to heavy or a hard hat because you don't like the colour. It might be uncomfortable but who would be the first to point a finger at RM/CWU for not taking action regarding H&S?

But do they make you safe or put you at risk?

The problem (for some people at least) seems to be, that they believe that drivers will be less cautious around them if they wear a Helmet. Personally, I still think that they make you safer. But I must admit, that I'm not as sure as I was before this discussion started.

There is conflicting data on both sides of the argument, and most worryingly of all: I can't find any details of Crash Testing of these Helmets. Surely, it would be a good idea to use Crash Test Dummies to settle the argument once and for all. Do they offer sufficient protection in an accident or not?

Personally, I do use all the PPE issued to me. Including the Steel Toe Capped Boots, which are compulsary in an RDC, because of all the FLTs and Scuds. It's not just Builders who need to wear them.

1. Employee in doo-doo, (as well as injured)
2. RM in deep doo-doo (as well as injured employee)
3. Employee still injured
4. RM in doo-doo (employee still injured)

Common theme here?

key thing is that cycle hel;mets do reduce head injuries. Some study did say once that a helmet might increase the danger of a rotational injury, due to the increased diameter of a helmeted head, but no one who is serious about H&S will ever say that wearing a helmet is a wrong thing. It's not worth the risk, wear your lid.

When first issued in Australia the safety specification for cycle helmets was much higher than it is now but the helmets were so uncomfortable and heavy no one wore them so the specification was lowered. What worries me about the RM issued helmets is that they are issued by RM. This is the company that cannot provide waterproof coats that are waterproof, or shoes that you can actually walk in without falling over so how do we know with helmets we are getting the best for the job?

cycle helmets

Being someone who has a "Shed head", I had greif when first ordering a helmut to wear. The gestapo at our gaff made me wear one that was so small it looked like a Blue pimple/boil on me nut, plus I could not do it up, so off I went with dreadlocks straps a swinging too and fro.
I told the said gesatpo that if i fall off da bike, the pimple/boil will hit the floor before my head so whats the effing point in wearing one thats too small. He just quoted policy. Why do they then issue shoes that are dangerous in da wet!

They also refused me an ash tray for my bike in case the ash flew in my face and I miss delivered through blindness!

You could'nt make it up!

Hear where you are coming from brother but you should have quoted the gestapo their own policy back issued PPE like cycle helmets has to be fit for purpose in other words no good them issuing you a small cycle helmet that clearly doesn't fit or fasten properly. You should have been issued with a proper fitting and fastening cycle helmet period. Didn't you take your problem to your unit or area health and safety rep?

I was unaware of policy and our CWU rep is 100% pathetic and suffers from NFI Our H & S rep was like a chocolate fireguard. But now he has resigned :Applause So I just put in for it :wave
