Package leads to evacuation at sorting office

A SUSPICIOUS looking leaky parcel led to the evacuation of a Hampshire sorting office this morning.

The Fareham delivery office, in Palmerston Drive, had to be evacuated at 8am after a member of staff found a parcel was leaking an unknown liquid.

The office remained closed for three-and-a-half hours while police and the fire brigade attended to investigate the suspect package. It turned out to be harmless.

The incident has led to knock-on delays in the delivery of some post in the surrounding area today, but bosses say the postal service will be back to normal by tomorrow morning.

Royal Mail spokesman Jackie Stenson said: "The building was evacuated as a precautionary measure and the fire service was called to check out the package in question. The substance leaking was not identified but was declared harmless.

"Some deliveries were affected this morning, but staff are working to make as many deliveries as possible this afternoon. Everything is now back to normal and the backlog will all be resolved by tomorrow."

The Royal Mail Delivery Office in Fareham was evacuated this morning after a mystery substance was discovered on a package and two letters.

The emergency services were called after two workers reported coming into contact with the liquid, and having tingling sensations in their hands afterwards.
Police, fire and ambulance crews rushed to the site shortly after 8am and with the office empty there were no mail deliveries in the town today.
The office has now reopened, and the staff were checked over by ambulance crews. They had their hands washed by firefighters and did not require hospital treatment.

Fire crews tried to analyse the substance with a chemical testing kit but the amount of the liquid was so small they could not get a positive result.
The police will be contacting the intended recipients of the items of mail, which are still being held by the postal service.
Mail collections were due to take place later in the day as normal.

We always get leaks from packets, sometimes liquid, sometimes powder but mostly soil (although on on occasion there was an open grasshopper package) but we've never called the emergency services in.
