How about something less convoluted. A 5 day letter service. You barely even need to plan for that, you surely wouldn't even need trials.
To keep the people happy that want the 6 day service to remain (the government/customers), just run a Special Delivery service on the day 1st class/2nd class letters aren't delivered. Obviously Tracked parcels would still be delivered 7 days a week.
Who cares if there's redundancies, we are already understaffed, already have high turnover, so redundancies can be limited by that anyway, natural wastage would probably be enough to bring us down to the right number of staff if you just give it time. Plus people want redundancy money. Who does redundancy harm if it's voluntary - nobody.
Theyve already crunched the numbers on that and it doesnt give them the savings they want
Thats a round of all mail being delivered 10 days a fortnight compared to 5 days a fortnight in the new model
Its incredible its going from 12 days a fortnight to 5 with no in between stage though for a few years to ease it in gently

If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

Whilst for a year or two it wouldn't give them the same savings at least it would be a start, for a year or so we'd also get use to delivering double mail every Monday. Going from deliveries every day to alternate days, at best, seems too big a step.

Because that would require an act of parliament which might take years if it ever got approved.
The 6 day letter service has to stay to avoid government interference.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Not if first class is still delivered on Saturdays though
The logical first step if not thinking of just how much the business can save, would have been to keep things as they are Monday-Friday and make Saturdays 1st class and tracked only
No act of parliament needed

Why is there talk from union officials then saying that if they optimised delivery model doesn't come in Ofcom will be forced to drop the USO to 3 or 4 days a week?
If the USO was at risk of failing, changes would be approved quicker than you think would be my guess.
Vicious rumour going around up here that talks over uso agreement have collapsed and cwu have walked away
Probably why the pay rise was made seperate then with there being little chance of agreeing on the other aspects. If people vote no on pay though that's going to put a big spanner in the works.
A decent % of our office do parcels only every day, Saturday being no different. It would require practically zero effort to go to parcels and 1C only on a Saturday.
Could also easily go to packets and 1C only on a Wednesday and give everyone a 9 day fortnight. One week half the office works 4 days, the other 5, then you swap over.
Why would any CWU member ever vote for the USO changes anyway, as who in their tight minds would vote for double post every single day with no pay increase etc. You have to sense it was always agreed no agreement could be reached hence why the pay deal was made separate.

I thought the whole bargaining of pay was around accepting USO change, it was supposed to deliver savings in the hundreds of millions which was supposed to pay for a higher than normal pay rise.
Like you say who's bothering to vote for USO change separately unless they come out with some big lump sum. Ultimately the business is going to do what it wants to survive as they have been since 2022.
It sets a tone of "threat" and "urgency" to lend credence to something which was just made up. A Rumour is an unofficial story or piece of news that may or may not be true, and which is spread from person to person, in this instance, royal mail chat.
