Do we need a change of CWU leadership? Yes – 1,000%.
Dave Ward should have gone after the last deal but the reality is that the top roles in the CWU are comfortable and are held for decades regardless of the outcome and this is damaging the union from within. Legacy members are becoming disillusioned and are either leaving the union or the business entirely. And what incentive is there for new starters to sign up if they are stuck on inferior contracts for years with no serious fight from the union on their behalf?
This union has made crucial mistakes in messing up strike dates and holding a costly second strike ballot but then never announcing any further action. They had no Plan B when RM dug in but plenty of excuses on why it was difficult to negotiate with the RM board. Just like now, they are dragging out negotiations until members are worn down and then presenting a watered a watered down deal as a “victory”. And the sad truth is that our pay has not kept pace with inflation for well over a decade. Real pay has fallen significantly and the CWU leadership keeps letting RM get away with it.
We all understand the business wants to shift from letters to a 7-day-a-week parcel operation. The world is changing, but make them f***ing pay for it!! Seems to me that the CWU leaders are more interested in maintaining cosy relationships with RM executives than standing up for their members. They keep repeating the company's tired “we can’t afford it” narrative despite the company bringing in billions in revenue and remaining profitable. Just look at the numbers. IDS claims RM made just £15 million in adjusted profit last year and with all the changes that have already taken place and the massive increase in parcel traffic, isn't it prudent for them to ask where is the money going?
That’s the real question that the union should be asking. If they won’t fight for us, then we desperately need a leadership that will.

I also read the first statement, and voted yes, only to look at the question underneath and realised I had voted the wrong way! Scrap the poll & re-run with a clear title and question that match each other

And those who started within the last 10 years see them as exclusively fixated on legacy contracts and VR terms, whilst fobbing off "new starts" with the perennial "we are working on it, just wait a few months" response
