brothermagrew, You hit the nail on the head,I can choose whether or not to wear my storm coat I am not being ordered to wear it,and I agree it is a pretty bad item of uniform, however I have modded mine and chopped the lining out.But I normally carry a light weight waterproof in my pouch for when it rains, and guess what ITS NOT HIVIS,no joking aside if we still went out when it was dark in the mornings I could see the reason for wearing the cursed vest, but thats another moan of mine cheers brother
Here is a wee snippet taken from the Health and Safety section of the CWU website.
A Joint Statement by Royal Mail Service Delivery and the CWU.
Cycle Safety
Wearing of High Visibility Garments and Cycle Helmets.
Royal Mail Service Delivery and the CWU recognise the need to improve Cycle Safety and in that regard the value of high visibility garments, ensuring that those delivering and collecting mail are more highly visible to other road users, especially when lighting conditions are poor.
The Stormproof and high visibility waistcoat both provide increases in visibility both during daylight and after darkness and both Royal Mail and the CWU strongly recommend the wearing of one or the other of these garments at all times when you are working outdoors. The Government also recommends the wearing of such garments in the DETR Road Safety Strategy and Highway Code.
The mandatory wearing was not solely as I understand it, for high viz vests (waistcoat) only, but for either the wearing of one or the other namely high viz vest (waistcoat) or the Stormproof whilst out on delivery and collections. As I understand it it is the wearing of high visibility garments and cycle helmets that is mandatory within Royal Mail.
