AN POST customers were last night urged not to post to certain areas in South County Dublin and Dublin 4 in a bid to alleviate a delivery backlog caused by a row with local staff.

More than 100 staff in delivery offices in Ballsbridge and Blackrock have refused to comply with new work practices agreed by the Communications Workers Union (CWU).

Residents and businesses in areas which are supplied by the delivery offices have experienced intermittent disruption since November 2007.

This has culminated in a severe backlog of mail, which has led to postal delivery delays of up to five days.

An Post will today notify customers of the disruption by publishing a series of adverts in the national media.

The company last night said it was trying to resolve the situation in conjunction with the CWU.

"We apologise for any inconvenience being caused by this disruption. We are urging people not to post to these areas until further notice."

National Officer with the Communications Workers Union Joe Guinan said the change was bound to bring about some "hiccups".

"When people work the same way for 30 years, there will be pockets of resistance to change," he said.

A spokesman for Dublin Chamber of Commerce said the details of the dispute should be made available to businesses in the affected areas.

"It seems that in this case both the trade union and the organisation are on the one side," he said.

They probably all voted against the Pay & Modernisation Agreement (aka get a small pay rise, and get poor working conditions), and are fighting to avoid the changes. Why else would the CWU side with RM?

This is in Ireland (An Post). It's the Irish CWU, not our own beloved CWU.

Sounds like they have the same problems though.
