It is an unskilled job whether you like it or not. Care to explain what makes being a postman a skilled job?

Every postie at Royal Mail should be on the same pay apart from maybe those who are starters and possibly still get paid a little bit less for the first 6 or 12 months.

Do I feel sorry for those people that chose to sign up to the new terms and conditions - no. They signed up to it so they were happy with it. Should the CWU equal pay/terms/conditions - yes.

Are we in a skilled job - no. Anyone can do this job, but it is a tiring job where you will suffer with aches and pains which can affect your life outside of work and how active you can be.

I agree with this and I’m a new entrant.

Although I didn’t know I would be on less pay and worse T&C’s than my colleagues for ever before accepting the job offer. I thought I’d start on less pay but gradually see my pay increase inline with experienced posties after a probation period, which as you say is the way it should be.

One of the biggest attributes the job asks imo is you have to be adaptable, which I think is what many new entrants struggle with. You have to be prepared to be thrown into the deep end. Maybe not so much for the posties that have their own duty but as a new entrant we have to be willing to go in blind most days.

It’s not completely unskilled. The managers couldn’t do it.

100% this

Loads of people, maybe even most people, wouldn't have the ability ( or "skills") to do this job.

That's why do many leave so quickly.

As per definition this is unskilled job - period. Can anyone do it? Absolutely no, in fact many people would struggle and leave eventually. This job doesnt require a particular skill but without local knowledge no matter how fit and skilled you are you will be struggling.

Changing the subject. What sort of pay rise is CWU proposing to the board? Negtiations is in the final stage and no figure has been mentioned once.

Every job? :left: Maybe if you've only ever worked shitty low paid jobs, like RM has become over the last 5 years.

They never tell you what’s being negotiated. All we know is they are talking about an above inflation rise (where have I heard that before?) A deal over 3 years- so how on earth can they know what the inflation figure will be in the future? :hmmmm

This above inflation offer that was rejected 3 times ? or 4 ? was that before inflation went up about a week or 2 back.

I agree on years 2 onwards that it needs to be linked to something like inflation with maybe +1 or +2 above if inflation drops to the bank of england target.

As for this years has to be min 5% increase, would like to see 6-7% but worried on what we would have to give up to get that.

I intend to reject any deal that includes a multi year pay deal. I want a decent 1 year pay deal. Given the state of the world we have no idea what economic situation we could find ourselves in next year and we shouldnt be locking ourselves into anything.

Doesn't look like it. The Union, without consultation, have rejected several above inflation pay-rises. My take is that instead of getting everyone an above inflation rise or even an inflation matching pay-rise they would prefer to accept a lower pay-rise for all in return for improved conditions for new entrants and better VR terms. What this means in practice is a huge rise for new entrants and a paltry rise for legacy staff and a reluctance by RM to offer VR as it would have become more expensive.
