Try not to think 2 bad . I reckon the royal mail will eventually be offering us all to buy down our hours.
You would be better to hold out, im not sure if they will buy them off you if
you suggest it to them, mayb someone else on here will know more.

As another recent thread on here says about the 30 hour week will not be 2 far away, better waiting and letting them offer you a payment. Stay strong and just remember although its not great there is a lot worse out there and also a lot of jobs which will not pay what we are getting, i know i have been looking  .

How long do you need to stay if you buy down your hours?

Answer: You don't
You can leave as soon as you've been paid, this has been proven recently.

A guy sold some hours in the buy down scheme, made around £3000, then handed in his notice, Royal Mail demanded the money back so he paid them.
Soon after he saw a solicitor and was told that Royal Mail GAVE him the money under a scheme to reduce hours under his contract.
As a direct result Royal Mail had to re-pay him the money plus compensation.

Morel: RM cannot demand payments to be paid back by Law.

As I understand it - the position is bought down and the fact that YOU occupy it has no bearing on you having to pay anything back. After you are gone that position will remain a part time job and Royal Mail will continue to make savings on it - it's just that paying you compensation allows them to reduce the hours whilst you occupy that position instead of having to wait until it is vacated as they have done in many areas. Long term staff are notoriously hard to shift (quite rightly in my opinion), and a buy down is a convenient way for both sides to resolve the issue.
We wish to serve - but we will not be servile

I agree, and instead of trying to bully long serving full-time staff out this is the better option. How long do we reckon it will take for this to be on the cards???????

We've had a load of buy downs in our office, they were told they had to stay 2 years, a few of them will be happy to learn that don't have to stay any longer than need be. Cheers for the info.
