Parcels are where growth is. Letters actually have better margins, it's just that we've given up on them. The company has previously stated for every 1% decline in letter volume it has to increase packet volume 2%.

You are dead right. What is happening is a strategic choice by RM and imho a very short-sighted one. Parcels are growing due to e-commerce but it's hyper competitive, low margin and flooded with gig operators like Evri, Amazon, Yodel. RM has deliberately chosen to manage the decline in letters by running down the USO, cutting walks, leaving mail in frames etc etc because they have higher margins. A race to the bottom please!
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

The way modern capitalism works is a business needs to make year on year profits, otherwise it is classed as a loss maker. The real assets are brick and mortar, fleet and service. These are sold for profit and leased back again for an annual profit. The customers and employees are the last thing that matters here.postslippete wrote: ↑15 May 2025, 17:50

According to that letter delivery will be done by Evri as well.
Weirdly DHL carries the Royal warrant on its vehicles, interesting times ahead.

The cheapest price to send a letter by DHL seems to be £7.85, I assume this is a service to send urgent important documents rather than just routine mail?

Odd isn't it, Evri have a terrible reputation for leaving stuff in public view so can be easily stolen and yet they're expanding, apparently 10 fold over the last decade, RM may aswell follow that model with packets and parcels. Posties could do even bigger duties thenqwerty2 wrote: ↑16 May 2025, 17:27Evri will just leave letters on the doorstep or chuck them in the hedgecobrakai wrote: ↑16 May 2025, 09:03https://news.sky.com/story/evri-and-dhl ... l-13367814

For parcel/packet delivery Evri are genuinely better than RM in the cities around the country now. DHL and DPD always have been a better option. Amazon are dogshit though because they could probably refund every single delivery and still make billions of £££pieoftheday wrote: ↑16 May 2025, 17:39Odd isn't it, Evri have a terrible reputation for leaving stuff in public view so can be easily stolen and yet they're expanding, apparently 10 fold over the last decade, RM may aswell follow that model with packets and parcels. Because Evri just doorstep stuff and don't bother knocking? That's great until your parcel gets nicked. Maybe people don't care because they just put in a claim. My original post was a bit sarcastic but In reality maybe we should just chuck stuff on the step?

Re: New competition to put RM out of business:Evri and DHL UK merger to deliver stronger Royal Mail rival
DHL DO actually deliver letters.
I remember speaking to a guy who had a blank white van and clocked his Hi-Vis jacket- This was during COVID Lockdowns around 2021 end of it.
He started randomly turning up and just happened to meet at the same point about 3 times a week, for about 3 months.
Got chatting to him, He says that it costs DHL too much to actually implement the structure RM has.
with this Merger, Evri could handle the mail/small parcels logistics and DHL could handle the delivery part- Evri seems to have a better handle of the inner workings (to a extent, who can forget every time they got swamped with parcels, they send them to RM for "help haha" )
RM Needs to get back in line with it's 1st time delivery for Everything before big businesses start looking elsewhere- I've heard that Evri are cheaper bulk sending now and RM being the most expensive- Quality these days however is just a Huge gamble with practically every delivery firm.....
It's sad really cos as a former Postie who was trained "Clear Frame, Clear Mind" drilled into our heads for so many years for that to be totally abandoned and left with "it is what it is, do what you can, try and take your lapse"......
