You can see royal mail rubbing their hands together at the potential savings and its all down to them not doing their jobs properly. When the big cuts in hours come which im sure they will soon or later after the sequence sorters come in it will be mostly their own faults but their too short sighted to see whats coming.
Only trained persons should be clearing the machine down :wink:

How much money would the Royal Mail save per year?.How could people pay there bills losing 10 hours per week?.
I'm on 30 hours a week and i come out with £201 after tax + insurence a week. (thats not counting d2d money as well) :sad: :lfo :cfo
This is why we need to go demand we introduce a 35-hour Gross Shorter Working Week, so all full-time jobs go from 40-hour contracts to 35-hour contracts with the same rate of pay.

Why 35-hour Gross? Well, the alternative 35-hour SWW is 35-hours NET, where you work 35 hours, but then have to add on your Meal Reliefs, but NOT be paid for them anymore.

The problem with 35-hour NET working week is that it would be:

1. no actual reduction in hours for those who have 1 hour a day break (e.g. in mail centres);
2. only about 1 hour 40 or 1 hour 50 off the working week for delivery full-timers, which is 20 or 22 minutes off the working day, and is hardly going to get the members up for a fight;
3. our hourly rate would go up, but we would no longer be paid for M/Rs, so no benefit.

Under a 35-hour Gross SWW:

1. there would be a genuine reduction of 1 hour working time per day, for all FT duties, as M/Rs would still be paid for by the business;
2. there would be a 5-hour reduction in the working week;
3. our hourly rate would go up, and we would still be paid for M/Rs, which would benefit part-timers as well, of course;
4. it would create 1 new FT job for every 7 we have now (40-35=5, 5x7=35), if we had the same workload to do;
5. it would counter-act the effect of Walk Sequencing machines taking indoor workload off FT duties, which would threaten to make FT jobs on delivery go from 40 to 35 hours if they take 1 hour a day of workload off us, or down to 30 hours if they take 2 hours per day off us.

We are at a crucial point in deciding our futures, with the introduction of Walk Sequencing (oh, and Flats Automation in MCs, by the way...).

The CWU leadership has to wake up and smell the coffee. The future is part-time work for all on deliveries unless we finally fight for and win the 35-hour gross shorter working week.

Some might say it is a good idea, but we are just not going to get it. That RM won't give us that.

Well, when have RM ever just given us anything? WE WILL HAVE TO FIGHT FOR IT!

I would say that if the 35-hour SWW is EVER going to have more importance for our members, I would like someone to tell me when it would be.

We have one major chance, when RM is pushing it's letters automation strategy, and making massive investment which threatens to make us all part-time, WE HAVE NEVER HAD A MORE IMPORTANT TIME TO PUSH FOR THE SWW!

Such a chance will not occur again for us in our working lives. The CWU leadership have to seize the chance, rise to the challenge, and campaign to convince the members that this is the way we have to go.

Well, either we do, or we will ALL have to learn how to live on £200 or less a week for a 30-hour or 25-hour contract doing a delivery.

The leadership, however, wouldn't...
When it comes down to it, full-time release reps like me don't have to do the job, the ordinary rank and file do.
Full-time reps sometimes need reminding who they represent. There's no time like the present...

London DIV rep i spoke to said because of the new sorting and watnot machines coming in they (The Union) will push for a SWW.
Should be interesting in the next pay talks.
But,personally i think it's a few years away yet.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

You don't get £280 after tax on 30 hours a week, this is BEFORE TAX.

That's good news to me: I won my Branch to sending in a motion to Conference this year, calling for a 35-hour SWW to be introduced whenever Walk Sequencing is introduced, which I hope other Branches who can smell the coffee will support.

I also convinced the NE Divisional Committee of the importance of the issue, and they decided to send in a second one on automation/SWW discussions to link the SWW to Phase 4 of the current Pay & Modernisation Agreement in the Joint Working Group on Automation.

Let's hope this sees the birth of a serious campaign.

Their is little point in debateing this as the time too strike was last time we striked as royalmail have everthing they wanted in the "agreement" endorsed by the membership last time we had a ballot paper sent to our home's!. Now royalmail can and will make full use of all time and this is why the JOB IS FINISHED!.
