It has been well researched with the h&s and the cwu that doing a 4 hour walk with a trolley does not give more fatigue than someone doing a 3-30hr walk using pouch boxes.

So what i'm trying to say is the 4hr walk will come in to save your jobs, already in London loads of offices are going for the 4hr walk which is on the 4 day week 4x10hrs or 4x10hrs and one 8hr for a week off in 6.

Depending on how you go into it most walks are not 4hrs,split one walk into 4 should not give you a 4hr walk in most places.
Obviously there are unlucky places.
And then you've got places that can't take trolleys.

Swings and roundabouts.
Quite a few 3.5hr walks with overload bags turn into+4hrs when done with a trolley. Slightly off topic but just while it comes to mind, what variations are built in to Pegasus to compensate for reduced walk speed on Trolley/bike walks?
Not sure i'll try to find out as there's a guy at my place trained on it,but i would of thought there would be some sort of compo.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

3.5hours over 5 days = 17.5 hours walking!
4 hours over 4 days = 16 hours walking!
As long as the weight issue was addressed seriously in all cases, it could be workable.
A good break of 30 minutes half way through the walk, with somat to eat.
More days off a week. Best part of a week off every three weeks.

Sounds ok to me but then again I haven't actually done it so what do I know?
Exactly,only 4 days in the dump a week,and '5 days' long w/e every 3 weeks.

Why agree anything when they have stole our pensions?????
Health and Safety recommend 8 hr shifts. RM clearly wouldn't be thinking of health and safety if introducing this.

Surely you don't mean to suggest that the personal welfare of their employees is not their main concern

postie's needing a toilet break during a 3.5 hour delivery will strugglewith a 4 hour delivery, health and safety would have to be paramount in any discussions

Our are rep gave the same sort of message at our AGM last week.We all have to be realistic and accept time off from the job is the best way forward for us and from a personal point of view moving to a 4 day week is the best thing we ever done(most if not all my colleagues at our office agree as well)

I still can't see how 10hr days work if you have town deliveries which are 3 1/2hr long.
It only make sense if you extend the deliveries which can only happen if they are rurals.

historically london and the major cities have had easy walks now they cannot hold on to them a number of units are moving to the 4 day week as the only way of gaining terms and conditions yes you will work for the privilliage there is no denying that. However it makes a large amount of savings for RM and quickly so they accept them as for those of you that hold out and remain on the standard 5 day week next time RM come for savings you will give them up for nothing it is a stark choice to make and will not be beneficial to all however do not discount things straight away because in the future wether people agree with me or not your walks will become longer.

As for not being able to extend walks at this current juncture you are correct alot of these 4 day weeks are currently being filled with mickey mouse travelling times and extra meal breaks which you are entitled to when working 10 hr days.

However the future of deliveries will be later whats the difference of delivering to house at 10 O'clock or 3 O'clock if there is no one in they do not know what time u get there and that is the basis of RM future thinking we only have to look at the continent to see how things will go.

It is a difficult situation for you all and when i was a rep i had to face these issues but some of you need to be more open minded or long term you will lose eveything in addition to what you have already lost.

One thing that has not entered the argument about longer and therefore later deliveries and has or will have an impact on H&S and sickness levels is how it will go down with the people we deliver to. 539 brings up a good point about workers not knowing if your delivering at 9am or 5pm, but what about those estates where no one works and they are living from giro to giro. My walk has such an estate and just the increase by 1 hour means that already people are getting frustrated at the time I am delivering. If deliveries become later than now (latest so far just doing my walk on a busy day is 2pm) I can see posties getting more abuse and perhaps more incidents of violence or assault against them. Better make sure the walk safe policies are up to date Reps just in case it does happen.

There was a letter in the Courier (I finally was so bored that I read it) about the later start times. In the reply the same point was made. That it makes no difference as the customer is usually out at work, but what interested me was that as RM know that packet volumes have more than doubled in the last 3 years due to eBay, Amazon etc. Now as RM know that packet volumes are up, combined with, that they know customers are going to be out, why are they removing driving duties, piling more on walking postmen and restricting the opening hours of callers offices to save hours in offices? Seems stupid to me.

"We know they won't be in, but you have to carry it round with you, and the customer won't be able to collect it until god knows when, but hey we don't care, we won't be getting the abuse."

Public service or business this is no way to run it, but then again unless the public spend thousands each week, RM do not care and we will get the flak for it in the street, in the callers office and in the press. :evil/mad

With regard to service buttons, I was told that the customers would have to change them to suit us. 6 months later the F/T staff move back to earlier starts meaning I now get out 30 minutes earlier , only 30 later than I used to. 8.30 now, 9.00 when they brought in the later starts, and 8.00 before. Lucky for my customers that they didn't change the times.
We and by that I mean RM as a whole are giving a very amateurish impression. To go from the best in the world to this is like falling from the Premiership to division 3 and all during Mr Leighton chairmanship.
