GLA challenges Post Office closure in court

THE GREATER London Authority (GLA) has begun challenging the Post Office closures in court on the grounds that the Post Office has failed to allow adequate time for a full consultation on the closures.

The GLA said that the six-week consultation period given by the Post Office was inadequate and follows up on the promise of Ken Livingstone.

London Assembly and Mayoral candidates alike have condemned the planned closure of 169 branches across London and a win in court for the GLA could have ramifications for the planned closure of 2,500 branches nationwide.

The number of post offices in London has decreased by 45% since 2001, whereas at the same time the same number of people living and working in the capital has increased by the same amount, prompting questions as to the adequacy of future services.

A spokesperson for the Great London Authority said: "We are committed to using all the legal and statutory powers we have available to us to fight this programme of post office closures in London.

"Post office closures have had a disproportionate effect on London. The action that is being taken today at the High Court is to protect local people and local communities and reflects out commitment to act promptly on behalf of Londoners."

Of course this has nothing to do with the Mayoral Elections due in less than a month - watch it die a death when the votes have been counted. Me I am cynical me is.

If the legal application for judicial review IS continued after the May elections, it will most
probably be unsuccessful - PO management will have taken legal advice on the necessary
minimum consultation period.
Livingstone has a record of wasting council taxpayers money on legal costs for seeking
judicial reviews on matters such as the Fare's Fair policy and PPI on London Underground.
I would think he must know he's going to lose (I do and I am not a lawyer) but it does
get him publicity at the London Council Taxpayers expense, and he is very good at self publicity.
Even in the unlikely event that the Court did order a 12 week consultation period, PO management
would still ignore any opposition - how many people would be in favour of the closures anyway?
