3. There is outdoor work which non drivers can perform on Saturdays including going out with a first class route to perform part of a duty including being replenished whilst out ok delivery.
Well that would be some sense, finally. Letter density would be low so you'd need to be independently mobile to avoid a whole lot of dead walking and needing the driver to repeatedly break off...

Further work is being done on alternative delivery modes such as electric bikes , trikes and HCTs.
How about just a bike? No need to reinvent the wheel, just fish the Mailstars out of the skips.

How did the CWU get itself into a position where it is trying to find solutions to fatigue for workers who have had their daily workload tripled by their employer, for no extra pay or perks?

How’s about telling the employer that their plan is ill thought through, costs too much in terms of employee physical health, and that they can’t save their £350m by treating their employees like donkeys?

Too much focus on improving attendance patterns and more Saturdays without fully appreciating the actual physical work involved in making that happen.

As far as I'm aware the original position when USO reform was first raised was that the duties would have to be revised to allow for the higher call rate without increasing spans , that position seemed to change before the pilots went live towards using attendance patterns to allow for longer spans but which side was doing the pushing on that?

My personal opinion, it's a step too far and should be reviewed before it goes any further.

As a side note it would be interesting to know what will happen in offices that already have 4 day weeks and 9 day fortnights, where will they find the scope for a considerably higher call rate?

Yes definitely the duties will need to be made smaller if it’s double or treble mail every day or there will be daily cut offs and letters piling high.

A non-driver delivering 2 or 3 days worth of mail paired up with a driver who is delivering parcels and 1c over a larger, different area isn't all that efficient if the driver is continually going back and forth to the non-driver with their next bags of mail.

The trike was positively laughed at in our office and many posties still prefer the bag over the shoulder method of delivering mail. Maybe we should consider bringing back the bag boxes so all the driver needs to do is drop all the bags of mail off?

How does a non-driver avoid fatigue if on the weekdays they’re doing 2-3 days mail and countless parcels and then on Saturdays they’re out walking even more ????

Sounds like the union are blind to how big of an impact that will be because we all know that when there are duties to cover on Saturdays the non-drivers will be sent out for miles with 1st class and parcels on a lwt or hct.

There’s simply no way a manager keeps them indoors when that inevitably happens.

You’ll be forcing them out of the door through sheer exhaustion.

Alternatively, they could be in for a fun Saturday spent prepping the D2Ds for the following week. The managers are currently doing this in our office.

If the plan is to keep non drivers indoors on a Saturday, you just know that these rogue managers will be sending them out on delivery doing leftovers.

Of course they will. They can’t stand having anyone working indoors when the rest of us are out.

Like what happens when someone is on rehab, they get to see what goes on after we've gone out, not a lot!
