A HOLIDAY park worker stumbled across a batch of unopened mail near Weymouth's main post office.

Charlie Dolan was walking in Lower St Alban Street when he saw the large pile of post on the pavement.

He said it contained a mixture of personal letters including what looked like utility bills and bank statements.

But Royal Mail said it could not have been left there by an employee and it was probably unwanted mail dumped by a member of the public.

Mr Dolan, 31, had just dropped his girlfriend off at a nearby taxi rank when he came across the pile.

"It was outside the sorting office, by the big delivery entrance," he said. "I couldn't believe it.

"At first I thought it was junk mail, just flyers and leaflets, but I went to have a closer look and realised it was pretty important stuff.

"There were benefit letters, telephone bills, water bills and personal letters, to different people at various addresses."

Mr Dolan, from Weymouth, said he banged on the office door but got no reply because it was a Sunday morning.

He said: "I presume the mail had been left there from the day before, when the office closed on Saturday.

"It was a huge amount of post, at least 30 items.

"Many of them were blowing away up the street so I'm guessing there was probably even more there to begin with."

Mr Dolan said he cannot understand how the mail came to be left there.

He added: "They were things that people really need and they were just outside on the pavement.

"I've lost mail before, I think everyone has. You do wonder sometimes where it goes.

"It looked like it had just been dumped there."

But a Royal Mail spokesman said: "The mail had been left on the public side of the gate.

"We're quite confident it couldn't have been left by an employee.

"All the mail the office had to send out on Saturday was delivered and there was no mail left there when the manager locked up.

"There have been no reports of any lost mail.

"We cannot tell but we think maybe it was unwanted mail and a member of the public left it there.

"If anyone comes across any mail like this, or has any concerns, they can call our customer service hotline on 08457 740740."

Maybe it was a gang of customers getting together with their unwanted mail and dumping it outside the DO. Happens all the time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's obviously a bundle of mail dropped by a postman on his way out but why he didn't realise and report it is another question

The thing is, why would RM say it was NOT a postman/Woman. VERY unusual for any support from them at the best of times, let alone the worse. We usually just get this is not normal practise, it was an individual soiling our good name and our thousand+ workers are mostly hardworking etc etc etc etc. Did RM open the letters and see a weird date which would back this up? Say DEC 2005 or something?

Still, I agree, looks like a dropped bundle, no excuses, the person must have known when they got to that street,

Of course it could've been a casual or a manager covering a duty

We are always getting customers bringing in mail for previous occupants, they wait till they have a dustbin bag full then bring it in and dump it on us, probably whats happened here but the D.O. was shut and they could'nt be bothered to take it back home, so just dumped it outside.

That doesn't sound like our mail to me ... catalogues, credit card applications, srewfix, saga, sky mags, ntl etc.
I wish I had a huge amount of post to deliver every day but unfortunately I'll have to stick with my 1500 items instead of 30.

I wouldn't presume that unless I knew postmen were still working after the office had closed, it's not something many companies do?
Well what was, it left there from the day before or dumped?

I got asked to check a bin near a bus stop not far from my office after a call to Customer services from a member of the public reporting that a Postman had dumped a load of mail.

It turned out it was a "huge" amount at least 31 items of mailsort for a house that had been split into bedsits, they were all for different rooms but people who had moved out, one of the occupants had got sick of the cluttering up the hall and dumped them in a bin.

The Postman was just delivering as addressed and one of the current addressee's was stupid enough to put them all in a public bin, this is the sort of thing that would make the local rags without them bothering to find out why they were there just blame RM.
