Because it suits them not too. Makes their job easier and that equals more coffee/ciggie breaks for them too.

I've had this discussion once before.

When I asked about the Insurance situation on here a while back, I was told that RM provided 3rd Party Insurance when you used your own car. I can't remember who it was now, but I PMd someone to ask about it, and was told that he had once been pulled, and was able to provide proof of insurance from his DO. Admittedly it was last year, but why the change now?
More worrying still, is that we will soon be expected to go to other Offices when required. If they aren't going to provide any Insurance for us, how on earth are we supposed to get there?
Unless you pay extra, you are only allowed to commute to ONE place of work. You can't (for example) turn up at an RDC, and then go to the Rail Terminal in the same Shift, or you won't have any Insurance during that journey.

Quite apart from the 6 Points and a fine that you would be risking. If you were to have an accident and damage someone elses car, or (God forbid) injure someone, you would be in far worse trouble.

Why should we pay extra to save them money on their Fleet costs?
They should buy some more vehicles!

As far as I'm aware if you fill in the RM form stating that you are using your own car for deliveries then they provide 3rd party insurance to your first delivery point but you still need to tell your insurance company that you are doing that otherwise they can invalidate your insurance.

I believe to maximum penalty for not having insurance is to have your car taken off you (at least until you can provide evidence that you have the proper insurance)

And this is what we've (the CWU) been saying all along. Hopefully, when flexibility comes in this will then stop the idiots who use their own mode of transport in order to get out on delivery as Management will be watching for any hours that they can 'bank' from you and use at a later date. Using the vans will slow you lot down sufficient enough to not give them any time back. Makes sense really...

From what we've been told at my RDC, this flexability rubbish will mean that some of us may be asked to fill in at other Sites if something unexpected happens (e.g. sudden increase in workload). They CLAIM that they will tell us the day before, so there won't be an issue with Car Insurance. Though how they can tell us the day before, but can't make the usual arrangements is beyond me.

Our local Reps tell us that it will be purely volountary, but we've all been here before, and know that it will be abused to save RM money.

But above all, I think the scariest part of all this, is that there are thousands, possibly tens of thousands of Posties out there, driving without Insurance! No wonder our Premiums are going up all the time, if there are so many uninsured drivers on the road. If they hit someone with Fully Comp Insurance, and can't pay the bill. Presumably the poor sod who was hit, will have to claim of his/her own Insurance.
