It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Probably thought up by the same eejit who introduced Total Quality Management aka "Customer First" in Post Office Counters Ltd. We had these people called Quality Support Managers* (industrial social workers  ) The one in our unit got caught fiddling his expenses and when he was interviewed under caution by the POID he complained "You're not taking my customer needs into account" Honest!

* They should have had 'em at the Charge of The Light Brigade............................ It would never have happened. They'd still be debating the best way of going about "measuring customer satfisfaction among the troopers" after charging the guns!

Wow. That brings back memories. Wasn't it about 9 months before they spent another NASA space shuttle budget on changing it back again? These people really have no f****** idea do they?!

No, but nothing ever happens to them. Look at that pair of nuggets running the show now. They've lost millions of pounds in cotracts, and their jobs are as safe as houses. You lose one RMSD and you're looking at two years on your record.

The problem now is everything is run by focus groups and others who don't actually work for a living and so nothing posiotive ever gets done. Never mind how dumb it was, I really would love to hear the reasoning for changing the name to Consignia, why they thought it was a good idea - just out of sheer curiosity. Anyone with common sense would have told them it was a stupid move before it even went ahead. Changing the name to just TWAT would have at least raised the odd smile.

Take Norwich Union, who are now part of the Aviva Group. Norwich Union retains it's name in the UK

Consignia was the name to be used as the holding group name, and the name to be used overseas. They felt at the time that expanding overseas was the best way to offset a declining domestic market, and one that was going to face competition in the near future. To do this they felt that the name Royal Mail wouldn't mean anything so needed to use another name overseas.

WHat went wrong:

1. Royal Mail at the time didn't have a clue how to buy companies and integrate them
2. Their strategy to buy companies was poor, and they paid over the odds for poorly placed companies.
3. They made a right hash of explaining the company in the UK, and the direction.

RM did not change it's name, but made a massive PR mistake.

The outcome was the loss of lots of money on overseas companies. A real reluctance in the future to attempt a similar strategy.

At the same time Deutschepost modernised it's domestic business, and then used domestic money to start buying companies abroad. They bought the DHL Brand and created, DHL Express, and DHL GlobalMail, and they also more recently bought companies and created DHL Logistics.

TPG bought TNT and started expanding globally.

That's my take on the history of this. I personally think they had the right idea, but shocking execution and quite rightly almost all of the execs from that time got the sack, though getting golden handshake retirements is not most of our experiences of being sacked

I do believe the name was changed to "Consignia"as it would of been a lot easier to privatise the company if the word "Royal"was not in there, but pressure made them change it back,so they could'nt screw the company up then, now they are trying to bankrupt it and drive it in to the ground :no no
