Amazon said they take the sale of age-restricted items 'extremely seriously'

Amazon has launched an 'urgent' investigation into the sale of knives to Axel Rudakubana, after he was caught with a blade which he bought from the online sales giant before he stabbed to death three schoolgirls. It comes after Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said it was a "total disgrace" Rudakubana was "easily able to order a knife on Amazon", with "stronger measures" needed to tackle knife sales online.

A Cerbera knife, 20cm in length, was among the items found by police in Rudakubana's house in Banks, Lancashire. Rudakubana purchased the knife from Amazon using encrypted software to hide his address on July 20, days before his attack on a Taylor Swift-themed dance club in Southport, Merseyside, on July 29.

An Amazon spokesperson told the ECHO: “We take our responsibility around the sale of all age-restricted items - including bladed products - extremely seriously and have launched an urgent investigation in relation to this tragic case. We use trusted ID verification services to check name, date of birth and address details whenever an order is placed for these bladed items.

“We have an Age Verification on Delivery process that requires drivers to verify the recipient's age through an app on their devices before handing over a parcel containing an age-restricted item.

“Our Conditions of Use and Sale make clear that anyone under the age of 18 is not allowed to set up an Amazon account or make purchases. The product in question was subject to age verification checks on delivery.”

In statement in the House of Commons this week Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: “The action against him was weak. Despite the fact he was convicted for violence and was just 17 he was easily able to order a knife on Amazon. That’s a total disgrace and it must change.”

Rudakubana was due to stand trial at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday (January 20), however he pleaded guilty to all charges including the murders of Elsie Dot Stancombe, Bebe King and Alice da Silva Aguair. He pleaded guilty to eight counts of attempted murder in relation to children who cannot be named.

Please remember that a Postie lost a child in this horrendous incident so please take that into account if you post a reply. Any overtly political post will be removed.

Who signed for the parcel ?

I know when I get an Amazon 18+ delivery I ONLY deliver to the person who's name is on the delivery invoice.

Don't care if it's the mother or father, the son ordered it and it's his age I need to verify.

How many posties hand over to parents, sister's etc ?

Anyone who opens the door can take it and sign for it if they look 18+

LTB 634/19 : Royal Mail : Age and ID Verification Services

Also...
Age Verification | Royal Mail

Which items require age verification when they are delivered

Knives or Blades as defined by s141A Criminal Justice Act 1988
'Bladed Products' as defined by s41 of the Offensive Weapons Act 2019
Customers may also be required to provide their proof of age for the following items, if the sender has used our age verification service:

Alcohol
Vape equipment and liquids
Tobacco

Our age verification process lets us validate proof of your age; it's a service used to send items that can only be delivered to a recipient who is aged 18 and over.

When we deliver age-restricted items, we need to make sure that the person receiving the items is 18 and over.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I know the rules but you are all missing the point about age verification of the person who ordered the item.

FYI: You can deliver an 18+ item to a neighbor, how the heck does that verify the person who ordered the item ? Please explain.

That’s nothing to do with us - it’s the household problem
