Got belted with it this morning I had four packets just under a shoebox size each for a different number on the same street, did what i was told went to a manager to ask about it, he told me they all fit in the templete so I had to take them. I replied fair enough, so i made smaller bags still(to make it fit comfortabley) and it took me longer and tomorrow he would have to pay me a hour extra. I will keep doing that and by the book. Thankfully I am dyspraxic and it takes me that bit longer, so the manager would be an idiot to comment as he known since i was a cleaner with romec 7 years ago.
Saying that tho this manager did talk me into staying in the job the first year I became a postman so I can't really slag this guy off, however the old dom, i don't have any nice words about him what so ever

Template for packets

Post by Wiltshireboy »

Most of them in our office are ok with taking packets, just 1 or 2 get stressy if they have to take anything bigger than a matchbox!
They take liberties, and chuck packets out for the van driver, but she`s too soft to say anything about it.
Anyway I digress. I think the template is now being used as a doorstop in the office. Oh well. :d'oh!

The packet template thing is too inflexible. I sort packets in the morning instead of IPS and some things that walkers can take out like larger than A4 DNBs, or large flat blue bags with clothing inside you can reject as they wont fit through yet the walkers have no problem taking them. At the other end of the scale you have those shoe box size ones that drivers will take but if they fit through the template the should, if the rule is enforced rigidly, go out via the walker.

Once again a senior Royal Mail Manager who has no idea what happens on the shop floor, has seen a problem, where in most DOs none occurred and has come up with an unworkable and inefficient solution to a non existent problem. Gawd help us from Managers who can't do the job of posties.

We have a new DOM and at the moment he is looking good. He is a pre SDD postie made good and seems to know when to jump in and when to stand back and let the workers get on with it, and lets be honest, that's exactly what most of us want in a leader/manager.

What makes more sense, to give a ridiculous amount of "oooo just fits" packets to walkers, stressing them out because they'll have to organise another bag, or giving them to your lazy ass driver ( small generalisation, not on a whole ), who usually rejects anything smaller than a vending machine anyway and will refuse till it's signed off by the DOM. It's tempting to just haul a second bag round with packets, as they're usually light amazon ones anyway, as opposed to going through every morning wasting 10 minutes bargaining with your driver.

Loved the bit about lazy assed drivers.
I am a driver and think the best place for the template is in the bin (its not big enough :Very Happy )
If I can help somone out and they are not taking the piss I do.
Remember it suits the managment to have us at each others throats. The less united the office the easier it makes it for them.

I don't mean it like that :p Just mean it in the sense of some experience i've had with "those" drivers, because yeah there are sound blokes who will help you, but there are obviously gonna be vice versas.

Managers are just as bad, in a way i think the ones we have encourage the packets to be totally dumped on the walkers.

"Why have you just put 6 small packets on that yorke"

"Because my bag is full "

"Nonsense.. they're small packets "

"Well yes and my bag is a bag, not a magicians sack"

Despite a massive increase in packets which is acknowledged by the company we still only have one designated packet driver in our office, so what do we do?

Do we force the issue using the official template which will pressure the management and quite wrongly, the packet driver so that another duty is created or do we continue to take more and more out on foot with the problems attached when we cannot deliver ?

I use as much common sense as I can in that no matter how much oversize, if I know it is deliverable, I will take it and my driver responds by helping me out as much as possible but he is getting way behind with his deliveries.

P.S. I hear that the USO no longer applies to packets - anyone care to enlighten us on that?

It's rolled in our place regulary without eyelids batted.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

We don't have the packet template at our small office, but I've been arguing the toss for it for a while now. Our office only has one driver and his duty is overloaded because of recent growth. The rounds are also overloaded for the same reason, so pouch drops are not sufficient and people chuck more packets out. He's pretty soft on this most days, but regularly goes over by 1 hour or more on busier days. But when I cover his duty I don't take any sh*t and will chuck packets straight back again to people who are taking the p*ss. Common sense used to work on this in our office but because of the pressure of the job from all conceivable angles, people in general are less willing to help each other out. I can see the benefit of a template for disagreements like these, but then again I'd just prefer it if everyone's job was fairer so people weren't under so much pressure all the time.

Thankfully most the van drivers in my office are sorted. I normally take 99% of the packets given to me, but my arguement against this entire template is thus. If you got two or more packets that just barely fits in the template and they are for the same bag then the managers (note i stated managers not drivers.) should use a bit of sense and take some packets off you regardless of the template. My mate had 9 SD one day and they all barely fit in the bag, with out mail in it. He asked the manager and the manager told him he have to carry two bags at a time untill he can get rid of his SDs. Needless to say he started doing the job by rule and thus was the reason why he was set up by the manager last year and lost his job.
If managers wants us to use the template, find I use it, and I make more bags up. if it takes me longer then either docket or he would have to carry the cut offs himself
