A BRAVE postman who single-handedly raced to the rescue of six people in a horrific five-car pile-up, was this week awarded for his incredible heroics.

John Campbell, 43, from Westcliff-on-Sea, has helped rescue around 100 people in the last 15 years, and admits he "just always seems to be in the right place at the right time."

The postman whose work is based at the Romford Mail Centre, in Sandgate Close, Romford, was this week awarded Royal Mail's 1st Class People's Award by GMTV presenter Lorraine Kelly for helping save the lives of six people in the terrifying car smash, on the A127, last November.

Mr Campbell said: "I was on my way home from work when I saw the pile-up. One man had popped a couple of ribs, a woman had smashed her mouth, and others had burns.

"Loads of cars went past but no one stopped. One man in a 4x4 was so impatient that he drove up to where the people had been laid out on blankets and nearly hit them."

John, the Royal Mail First Aid secretary for Romford and Ilford and a first-aider himself for the last 13 years, said that accidents just seem to follow him around.

In August last year his quick-thinking helped save the life of a man in his early 70s who had tripped and broken his neck.
