Advertiser to host meeting over poor state of deliveries

POSTAL workers' morale is at an all time low, according to the union which represents them.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has responded to accusations from anonymous postmen published in last week's Harrogate Advertiser.

The beleaguered employees claim the town's late deliveries crisis is echoed by staffing problems and high pressure inside the organisation – including demands they walk at 4mph for three-and-a-half hours at a time when delivering mail.

This week CWU's north east regional representative added fuel to the fire, saying the pressure is a major problem.

Paul Clays, himself a postman for many years, said: "Morale is at an all time low because of imposed working conditions. The business that we work for takes no notice. The pressure that postmen and postwomen are put under at the moment is just too much.

"It's the people's post office unless you're one of the people who want to use it, or one who works for it. If managers are behaving like that it's no wonder the postal workers are up in arms."

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "As we have said, we are making significant changes to the way we work in Harrogate, to even out the time each postman or woman spends delivering mail so that we provide the best possible service for all our customers, and fair divisions of walks so that each delivery round takes more or less the same time to complete.

"A delivery person would not be expected to walk constantly at four miles per hour as we account for stopping at each address and the gradient and terrain, all of which delivery staff have been involved in establishing."

Chaired by Editor Jean MacQuarrie the meeting will aim to identify the main issues affecting our business community and the impact the poor postal service is having on firms.

It is hoped that by acting together we can voice our concerns to Royal Mail in a more effective and cohesive way to achieve the outcome we deserve – a reliable, efficient postal delivery service for businesses in Harrogate.

The meeting will be held at our offices at Cardale Park commencing at 11am. A number of organisations have already telephoned to register their interest and we are looking forward to welcoming them on April 15.
