I’m quite happy earning almost a grand a week over christmas (with a good measure of ot).

Assuming you are on a the new contract of 30 hours and on £14.78ph like me you're doing a 12 hour day compared to my 7 hour day.
We must bow down to you for earning £52K a year in such a menial job.

If you are are on the lower rate @£12.78 then you are doing a 14 hour day over 5 days.

You crack on and earn that grand a week I'm happy with £590 and a life.

Each and every hour of Ot is paid at £18.58. I work 10-hour days. Your calculations are thus flawed, and your assumption makes an ASS of U and ME. I’ll go get a life while you go get an education, perhaps starting with basic arithmetic.

If they ‘harmonised’ the overtime rate for all staff to nearly £20 an hour I’d be a bit happier to do a bit more. £13 before deductions in the cold and dark just doesn’t appeal.

Each and every hour over your 30 hours contracted is not paid at £18.58 that does not kick in until you go over 40 hours.
So my maths based on an initial assumption of earnings was pretty spot on.

With those rates you’d get a bit more than someone on a regular contract doing those hours. Each to their own but I do feel they need to get everyone on the same rates soon.

My daughter is 18 and works in a cafe during uni . She is on 11 75. an hour . I feel embarrassed to tell her what we get. Many people at mine have worked their day off and come payday said never again. Back in dickension Britain. We live in a bubble and don't realise what's going on in the outside world. You could never support a family.

But It is grim outside the bubble, trust me. Families bringing in £80k pa are finding things tough and finding it impossible to support their families. It is a country-wide problem called the cost-of-living crisis.

Does your daughter’s cafe employer provide her with a similar pension to your RM one? Does she receive six months’ full pay in the event of sickness etc?? Don’t think so.

You’re comparing apples with pears, mate. If you’re that embarrassed with your lot, why not go and work in a cafe yourself? Someone else will gladly fill your RM boots…

I think a very valid point being made by everyone is that the Over Time Rates are CRAP

I believe the CWU should have been sorting this problem DECADES ago instead of messing about with minor issues. RM have always relied on posties doing stupid ammounts of OT to make ends meet, and this happens in other working class jobs I know.... because I've done it.
The difference in a lot of these other jobs is that when you're putting in these extra hours, making the sacrifices, you get a significant financial bonus that makes it worth while.

RM is quite happy to have thousands of posties working stupid ammounts of OT because it's basically only costing them the flat rate.
And as for the Moron who suggested, and agreed, that OT rates should DROP after the intial ten hours wants to taken around the back and beaten with a copy of the Finacial Times.

Because a Decent OT rate is not impacting on RM financially they have no incentive to employee more staff to relieve that financial burden Hence they expect the existing staff to ''Flex Up'' and fill that gap .... and unfortunately a lot of them do .... because they need the money

Therefore I tend to stick two fingers up to RM at Christmas, TRY to finish on time, and look forward to a Christmas Day/Boxing Day break where I'm not crashed in front of the TV totally burnt out. I suggest we let RM worry about ''Delivering Christmas'' for THEIR Shareholders!

I don’t think my Ts and Cs are paltry though — I was merely being facetious and repeating the rhetoric spouted on here. They are, admittedly, inferior when compared as against the legacy contract, but still head and shoulders above anything elsewhere. As Mike Skinner rightly told us, A Grand Don’t Come For Free!!

I couldn’t care less how I am perceived, and so no apology from you is needed. Aside from a grown-up debate with a few decent posters, my real purpose in posting is to give a balanced view (from the perspective of a new starter) for any new starters, or prospective new starters, reading all the negativity and hyperbole posted in this thread. I actually repeatedly looked to this forum for “insight” when joining RM as an agency worker, and I know others do too, so it is providing a rounded view for their benefit that is important.

If the job is that rubbish, the pay so bad and we are all being exploited, why are you all sticking around?

Smooth i started this thread about the avalanche of parcels that occurred this week, and really to check it wasn't just my part of the country but all over.
Which it proved to be.
How we perceive we are being paid in terms of our worth is subjective, most of us think we are worth more, you think we get more than enough and stay rigidly fixated on the legacy workers.
Seeing as how it would be in your interests to have your t&c's levelled with legacy workers perhaps try to get onside with them instead of battling against them.
It is not in our interests to have a 2 tier work force, no matter what you think, and i would be the first one voting yes to any deal that included it.
Working in RM is hard enough without a chip on your shoulder.

Eff me! Parcels through the roof on Saturday though, whole office had USO failures, one colleague, on admittedly the crappest duty, did no letters whatsoever as he had over 120 tracked, another took out two rows and only did a quarter as he was swamped too, no one took cleared at all as no one wants o.t on a Saturday, me included! I had 63 tracked and took a whisker over two rows of my duty and only had 20 mins to spare when I got back to DO. Absolute shi*show, dreading tomorrow, will do an hours o.t but that's it! Off Tuesday and don't want to screw up my rest day cover but at the end of the day I am not starting at 7:15 and getting back to the office at quarter to 6 like my colleague last Wednesday (on the crappest duty in office).
