Re: Working in a mail centre
For the walking moaner’s:
In an MC you will walk an average of 10-14 miles per night as an ordinary joe,
if you are a warehouse porter you will walk around 15-20 miles per night all whilst pushing a loaded sleeve. (you never get to walk anywhere without a loaded sleeve, when you take one out you must bring one back in for despatch, you will be pulled up if you are seen not doing this)
This is all on a solid concrete floor with zero give in it (for the yorks to roll freely)
We have logged it on steppers and apps many times.
Oh & there are NO “early finshes” you stand and clock to time on SISO.
The only real plus point for a postie would be that you are indoors and not exposed to the elements.
Avoid CSS & ILSM as it would probably finish you off if you are looking for a “cushy gig”

Re: Working in a mail centre
For the walk posties if you work in a MC if you work Earlies then you will have every Sunday and Monday off but will work every Saturday. If you work Lates then you will be by and large be Monday to Friday starting at roughly 2 pm working to 9 30 pm unless you are unlucky and one of the Lates who work Tuesday to Saturday with same hours but the deep joy of a Midday to 7 pm on Saturday. Then there is Nights where you will work 9 45 pm to 5 45 am Mondays Thursdays and Fridays and 10 45 pm to 5 45 am Tuesday and Wednesday unless on the Mech where you start and finish 15 minutes later or if you're really unlucky you are on a 6 week rotate of a rolling Night off during the week but get the joy of working 5 out of 6 Sundays 8 am to 4 pm. So 5 out of 6 weeks you are either heading to or from work every day of the week. There are no Wally weeks no 9 days a Fortnight options oh and there is literally no point in the day there aren't Managers standing observing what you're doing

Different days for earlies here and the hours are different. Probably depends on where in the pipeline your MC is locateddenhamhoop wrote: ↑09 Dec 2024, 23:05For the walk posties if you work in a MC if you work Earlies then you will have every Sunday and Monday off but will work every Saturday. Re: Working in a mail centre
I do around 10k steps per night when doing manual sorting in MC. That's for items which were rejected from machine or tubes and other strange items.
Sorting at lanes can be leisurely or can be crazy. I work night shift, which I think is much busier than morning one. I worked couple of morning ones and it was very slow comparing to night shift.
Comparing to deliveries, it's probably light and nice. And no customers to deal with. Everytime we have crazy weekend night with T24, I think, it will be hard day for delivery guys.

The shifts sound crap, but probably is less physical.
I often think it would be a good place to go in old age (!), but there are no vacs anymore - all just filled with casuals

We have had a couple of posties invalided out from their DO to the MC,eggraidonmojo wrote: ↑10 Dec 2024, 18:22The shifts sound crap, but probably is less physical.

Do you know what they did to them?
They were given warehouse porter roles and walked 15-20 miles a night, pissed off was an understatement & they did that for 18 months before managing to pick another duty in a resign.
You may be able to wrangle a transfer from DO to MC on “mobility or medical grounds”

Re: Working in a mail centre
Whatever happened to the old days when you had in a rotation Mail Centre work , Night shift inward sorting , Station work and 2 deliveries?
People knew all the jobs.
Sorry but RM is now populated by clowns.
It mattered back then , it was a service…..

Re: Working in a mail centre
Nearly 40 years on delivery and I’ve only known one postie transfer from a mail centre to our delivery office.
I think that was because his brother in law was here.
