The only way these new longer duties with mail every other day would stand a chance of working is if THAT days mail is released from the mail centres each morning. Leaving it to a local level to separate the 1st class, day 1 or day 2 second class sounds like a disaster.
Monday morning comes, 'Just put that tray for today over there, and we MIGHT get to it on Wednesday.'
Come Wednesday that tray is at the bottom and you get a particularly busy letters day and it gets left until, maybe, Friday.

Sounds very like what still happens when someone has to try and do both sides of a van share. After the second day it falls apart.

They could make it work if they didn’t have to mess about with first class letters only deliveries. What will happen will be a complete mess.

Shorter duties going out every other day wouldn’t be too bad. A much higher call rate in a concentrated area. Problems arrive when the bulk postings hit presently on spread out duties that were thought up based on traffic levels just after the strikes.
Walks wouldn't be shorter.

So not all the mail would get delivered on delivery days .

And it would end up with constant backlogs, failures, daily firefighting and a further decline in service quality.

We all know this, it's how RM operate.
The first three days would be the glorious new world. Day four onwards would be an everlasting bonfire 🔥

The day 1, day 2, etc 2C for the mech can be done by tweaking the DTS software. For the manual it'll have to be done at the DOs, with the volumes it won't be viable in MCs

The problem with this idea that you can somehow make rounds as big as you like and keep the oversize etc as separate duties fails to take into account that you know, we aren’t robots and can’t walk infinite distances. I walk approximately just over 15 miles a day with my current duty, and I definitely feel that at the end of the day, and I am fit and (relatively) young. Much further and I’d have to consider at least changing the type of duty I sign up for.

I thought it was opposite being proposed rounds would be up to 20% shorter as we'll be effectively delivering double post every day? I guess eventually even that post will drop off, perhaps by then somebody will suggest 2c post is just delivered twice a week!!

I can't help thinking that RM's strategy of de-prioritising letters and focussing on parcels is a zero sum game. We are delivering less letters and want to deliver them less frequently and this should in theory make us more profit by saving on labour costs. However, we are delivering more parcels and want to deliver them 7 days a week, up to 8pm at night but we are not making as much profit on parcels as we have:

1. increased the hours/days available for delivering parcels
2. reduced our parcel costs due to it being a very competitive market and our market share of parcels has decreased

So in the end we deliver more parcels and less letters but our net benefit will be ZERO.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

There is not a chance that they will make the walks shorter. It will be the geo route’s version of shorter, which won’t actually be shorter.

Exactly as much as that or less 🙄
They’ve already established that it costs much more to deliver parcels than letters, so logically, you would have thought they would have kept us delivering the majority of parcels together with letters, for as long as possible in order to keep the advantage over the competition for longer. But no.

Walking part of the duty will be shorter I'd imagine, you just need tag on another 3 hours of packets, collections and first class letters for an area on their day off from letters that you'd need to drive around with afterwards.

The Union gets a lot of stick, including from me.

But surely their job is to make things better than they otherwise would have been for their members?

Not perfect, but just better, within the environment they're faced with. I think the CWU still does that, for all its faults.
OMG have you been living under a rock for the last 10+ years (Dave Wards tenure)? Are you Dave Ward pretending to be a postie? The only job that has got better in the last 10 years is Dave Wards, votes for his own pay (140000+ a year), gets lots of free RM shares (for shafting his members) and he gets away with it every time because the majority of his membership would sell their own granny, for a £200 lumpa. The union have totally wrecked this job, and you reckon they have protected it, LMFAO

No. I said things would be EVEN WORSE THAN THEY ARE NOW without the Union.

Thought I'd made that clear, but have added caps to try and help.

I doubt "Evie" is going to be able to deliver all the 1c, Specials and Tracked plus do the Customer Collections if the walks aren't made shorter, plus doing effectively two days mail every single day will be a total killer on the days at the end of each.
