Union Using Door to Door Supplement as Bargaining Tool

RM are considering ending all D2D contracts.

I haven't heard this before.

It has been said several times by Martin Walsh since an AGM a couple of months ago. Whether it is because businesses are sending fewer leaflets or because of RM’s long term plan of killing the mail side of the business I don’t know.

In the same breath he mentions the D2D supplement. So if it has nothing to do with the delivery of D2Ds, someone had better tell him.

It’s not a a door to door supplement and the fact that they think it is , isn’t a surprise.

Its a common name for it, and its pedantic to explain exactly what it is. But its a delivery supplement that they are negotiating to take away. No drama, no background, history or context or terminology or naming is relevant. It is money at the end of the day that members get week in week out which is being negotiated away.

It’s not pedantic and it’s relevant to the question that was asked as it was specific to new starters who do not get the delivery supplement that everyone not on the new contracts gets including those in mail centres who don’t do deliveries.

This is a complete misrepresentation of what we said.

We are not looking at reducing of removing the delivery supplement from anyone who currently receives it.

However for the 19 thousand new entrants which joined Royal Mail after 1st December 2022 we want a time line when they receive the supplement.

Royal Mail imposed new entrants terms and conditions the CWU have never agreed them. We want the harmonisation of their terms and conditions with the old contractss.

However to get to the same hourly rate as full timers on the old contracts it will cost an extra £2000 per year this is with the £30 delivery supplement.

We also have to add the RRIS payments which range from £5 to £35 per week and the outer and inner London weighting which is a further significant cost.

So we want the company to commit that there will be flight path to full harmonisation of new entrants contracts over two years.

Remember prior to new entrants terms and conditions new entrants did not go onto the full rate until they had been established which could be anything from 12 months to 24 months.

The harmonisation will cost over 200 million. We also want an above inflation pay rise , an increase in VR, an increase in full time jobs which all cost so agreeing a flight path is a sensible way to ending the two tier workforce.

Since when have the union suddenly become some sort of accounting firm, cost of this and cost of that. None of this is relevant to your members in any way.
We all want all the things you talk about in terms of our pay and t&c's, but the costing of them is nothing to do with us. You must realise the more you talk this way the more you sound like the company itself.
I couldn't give a toss about how much it costs and the more you talk about the more bored i become.

I don’t accept that at all. Members don’t want reps to make false promises, they want to understand the challenges they face.

The easy and most popular thing a union rep can say is we going to do x, y and z and then not deliver it.

The vast majority of members I meet understand the challenges the union and government face.

This is a 8 billion pound company which made a 67 million loss this year.

It does not matter who owns the company unless there is change and growth this company will not survive within the next few years.

We have over 70% of letters now being delivered by Down Stream accesss where the cherry pickers creamed off the top leaving Royal Mail to deliver the final mile cost.

40% of letters are now in the enconomy Mail product which does not get delivered unless there are two items to an address until day 4.

Most customers are downgrading from 1st class due to either pricing or quality.

Royal Mail share of parcels has halved since privatisation and whilst Royal Mail remains the dominant player in the 48 market their share of the 24 market is less than a third.

Self employed drivers in Evri and other couriers are undercutting Royal Mail but Royal Mail do not off a next day delivery up to 8 o clock.

You may want to not hear the realities of what is happening and shout from the sidelines but this is what the union has to deal with and that is the reality.

It would save time and also it would ensure that they are all done, so the delivery rate would increase - which could increase business, if RM is noticeably more reliable at delivery d2ds.

It would save a little time I guess, would be nice if they were all in one envelope but that won’t happen.

Definitely if I'm assuming that to be machinable they must be letter size/shape or thereabouts rather than the selection of crap shapes and sizes we currently get, the worst culprit for taking ages to prep/tie up/deliver is the bloody awful dominos leaflet.

A vast majority of working people have had a real world cut if you bring inflation into it. Not many have had their net income reduced though which people seriously believed the CWU were suggesting as an idea. You can knock the union for a lot of things without having to invent ludicrous shite.
