BERLIN — A union manager says 2,200 postal workers walked off the job in southern Germany to protest an extension of their work week and the abolishment of their layoff protection.
Anton Hirtleiter of the ver.di service workers' union says mail distribution centers Bavaria and Hesse states were closed as part of the action Wednesday.
Workers are demanding that their layoff protection be upheld until 2011 and that their work week remain at 38.5 hours _ instead of the 41-hour week that employers are asking for.
