Royal Mail investigating after heartbroken nan's irreplaceable items lost

The woman said the trail for the irreplaceable items has gone cold
A nan claims Royal Mail has lost sentimental Christmas presents intended for her children. Marilyn Taylor sent 20 of her late husband Alastair’s ties to be made into memory bears for her son, Alex, 44, and daughter Lucy, 41.
Some of the ties were from his professional career as an accountant and a secretary. The ties, after being made into bears, were posted back to Marilyn in Devon from St Helens depot on Friday, October 11. However, it has been weeks since they were posted and the 75-year-old nan-of-two still hasn’t received them. She contacted Royal Mail and was told that the delivery had been misplaced and an investigation launched.
The mum-of-two told the ECHO: “The trail has gone cold. They were tracked items, but they have gone missing, and I will probably never get them, it seems.
"It was devastating when I found out they were lost. The bears were going to be Christmas presents, so it was heartbreaking.” The Royal Mail confirmed to the ECHO it was “actively” investigating the situation.
The spokesperson added: “Our colleagues are searching the relevant delivery offices and mail centres, as well as placing posters at our National Returns Centre. We will be in touch with the customer directly and will update them on the outcome of this search.”
Alastair died from prostate cancer in November 2022. Ten of his ties were sent for each bear, costing Marilyn £150. She added: "Alastair was a great family man and a grandad. He was so generous, kind and considerate with a lovely Scottish accent.
"He was a hard working man. Now, nothing is coming back - not the ties or the bears. They have just been lost, and there doesn’t seem to be an explanation. When I rang up the Royal Mail, a gentleman told me trying to find them would be like finding a needle in a haystack."

Re: Royal Mail investigating after heartbroken nan's irreplaceable items lost
Searches of MCs for a single item don't happen, there's not the time to do so. I'm sure the same applies in DOs.
Did they actually get sent by either Tracked or SD? 1st or 2nd class Signed For gives a "tracking number" but won't be trackable throughout the whole system

Does it really matter what method they were sent by? The bottom line is that items shouldn't be going missing. And a package containing two memory bears would be a decent size, not something that could slip behind a frame.

Re: Royal Mail investigating after heartbroken nan's irreplaceable items lost
The article suggests they were Tracked, assuming they were and that they entered the RM system then there should be some information where they were last scanned. It's hard to believe a Tracked item can just lie around anywhere when there's panic if just one is found in our DO at the end of the day.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑27 Oct 2024, 09:00Searches of MCs for a single item don't happen, there's not the time to do so. This is the sort of problem you get when DOs aren't scanning any Tracked in on arrival at the DO and only scanning the Tracked when sorting them to walks. Something like the package concerned wouldn't be held up in a MC unless there was an issue with the address label.TopperGas wrote: ↑27 Oct 2024, 18:31The article suggests they were Tracked, assuming they were and that they entered the RM system then there should be some information where they were last scanned. Perhaps it has been damaged going through a psm? I hope it’s recovered eventually..

Likewise it just wouldn't sit around in a DO anything we receive with issues with address labels is past to the COM to deal with.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑27 Oct 2024, 21:21This is the sort of problem you get when DOs aren't scanning any Tracked in on arrival at the DO and only scanning the Tracked when sorting them to walks. It changed some time ago - ‘Tracked Ready for Delivery Scan’ at the Prep frame" started and received at DO stopped. They were getting too many complaints when the oversize walks failed.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑27 Oct 2024, 21:21This is the sort of problem you get when DOs aren't scanning any Tracked in on arrival at the DO and only scanning the Tracked when sorting them to walks. When the new scanning system goes live in MCs AFAIK when a york/sleeve arrives at the DO all the items in the york/sleeve will get flagged as having arrived at the DO. There's going to be a lot more mail deemed to have been failed by the DOs.TrueBlueTerrier wrote: ↑29 Oct 2024, 08:43It changed some time ago - ‘Tracked Ready for Delivery Scan’ at the Prep frame" started and received at DO stopped. Good, as it might mean more posties are taken on to clear them if that's really the case!SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑29 Oct 2024, 11:24When the new scanning system goes live in MCs AFAIK when a york/sleeve arrives at the DO all the items in the york/sleeve will get flagged as having arrived at the DO. We now have tracking info in the back of the trailers. When a York passes this, it is scanned and it knows how many Yorks are on the lorry and where they are going.

Think it's only a matter of time before boxes of manual letters, mech letters and flats get scanned to yorkssweepster70 wrote: ↑29 Oct 2024, 17:58SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑29 Oct 2024, 11:24When the new scanning system goes live in MCs AFAIK when a york/sleeve arrives at the DO all the items in the york/sleeve will get flagged as having arrived at the DO.
